I know there was a separate thread for this, but I couldn't find it. SIU just cashed my check...after sending it in like a month ago. I called them yesterday and they said it went to the school for processing...but it was conveniently cashed the next day...so i don't know. if it hasn't been cashed yet, maybe call them.

Here's to hoping my southern illinois residency helps me out because SDN people are freaks with their scores.

I am gonna start D-School this fall at SIU and lemme tell you, SIU is as laid back a dental school as there is. I interviewed at midwestern, UIC, and marquette and everyone there, from the interviewers to the student tour guides, seemed like a d-ck. I think you are pretty much in because they really do prefer rural candidates and they LOVE U of I students and you have very good stats.

I sent my check like over a month ago and it got cashed early July
I don't think a phone call will do much because I called after the check was cashed

I have similar stats as you (3.7 science, 19 DAT) but I am not from rural area. I hope that won't hinder my chances because I am really interested in that school

yeah it's probably my top choice. how do you feel about it being in alton and being its own campus? obviously i don't have an issue with rural, but so much dental all the time might get monotonous.

Alton is actually pretty ghetto, but the area around the dental school is really nice. I actually like that its completely separate. We have our own cadaver lab without any of the med school students bothering us (unlike UIC and Midwestern). We have our own gym and workout area. The professors offices are like a minutes walk from the lecture halls. We have our own library. St. Louis is 20 minutes away, and a I think my tour guide told me that there is a shuttle that operates between Edwardsville campus and the Alton campus. But hands down the best thing about Alton is the inexpensive cost of living. I'm paying 400 utilities included for a one bedroom apartment. Back in the Chi, a one bedroom goes for like 800 - 900.

How long does it take to get from Edwardsville campus and Alton campus from the shuttle? How often do the shuttles depart?

How is SIU's tuition?

The tuition at SIUE is quite cheap compared to other schools. I think its like 30,000 or 40,000 per year? don't have the number in front of me. that's obviously if you are in state, which you are.

They said it takes about half an hour with the shuttle, I am not sure how often it operates. Most students hitch a ride with other students who have a car and are willing to drive. Driving should take no more than twenty minutes. As for tuition, I recently received my bill and I have to pay 38000 per year. The estimates that you see on their website includes the cost of books which are like 2000 more, but from what I have been hearing, you need very few books for dental schools cuz everything runs on powerpoint. Its gonna get a bit expensive next year due to summer school costs and the need for additional equipment, but third year, even though it has summer school, will not require any new equipment and fourth year has no summer school cost and no new equipment costs so it should be around the cost of first year. Hey at least, they didn't blindside us with a 15000 tuition hike like UIC.

Yeah UIC's tuition is nuts nowadays. How much did FAFSA award you in loans to cover for SIU tuition?

Do you know how the clinics/facilities of SIU compare to UIC? I know UIC is renovating a lot of their facilities and I was wondering how good of a clinical school SIU is.
No summer school 1st and 4th year sounds really cool
Thanks for your posts btw.

I'm a big fan of the SIU Alton campus. Seems very close knit. Coming from a big university, it would be quite the change but maybe for the better. Even though its in a small town, being only 20-30 mins away from St. Louis is a great advantage, plus I have a friend whose going to be a 2nd year and says the bars around Alton are fun on their own surprisingly. SIU seems to be the cheaper route vs city life. Pretty big debate. UIC and SIU are definitely my top two.

So FAFSA gave me a whopping 57000 but i really don't need that much, I calculated it and I need around 46-47 for the whole year. 8500 of that is subsidized so need to worry about. 32000 is unsubsidized at a rate of 6.8 percent. and the rest of it is under the grad plus loan at a frikin 7.9% rate. I am only taking like 6 or 7 grand of this loan. What most people don't realize is that as a graduate, you are independent, so your parent's income has zero input on the amount of Subsidized, Unsubsidized, or Grad Plus loan. If you don't file taxes then your EFC will automatically be 0 and FAFSA will cover all the expenses. If you work and file taxes and make a whole lotta money then FAFSA won't cover everything since your EFC wont be 0. On a related note, SIU does tell us to put our parents info on the FAFSA because they get grants and scholarships that they give out to students whose parents aren't rolling deep

If you get awarded more than you end up using/needing, can the amount roll over to next year or given back the to bank so you don't have interest put on it? How does that work?

You have the option of accepting a partial amount of any loans given but you will have to take the Sub. and unsub. in the full amount because it comes out 40500 and just the tuition for SIU is 38000. The remaining 2500 and a good 6 or 7k from the grad plus should make a good budget I would think. So its a better if you budget everything before hand and see how much you actually need. The last thing you would want to do is keep that unused money because that 7.9% is crazy. Also, the grad plus has an origination fee of 2.5% I think. So if you accept the full amount given to, say 15000, it comes out 375. If you only accept what you need, say 7000, its 175. FYI. they are gonna stop subsidizing the 8500 from next year which sucks
