In the interest of choosing non-medical related diversions for my gap year, I'm looking to buy and learn how to ride a skateboard, longboard or cruiser (or maybe skateboard with soft longboard wheels?)? I'm thinking it might be useful for riding to and from school, library, etc. I don't like riding bikes because bike lanes are terrible.

Also does anyone know of any good beginner boards? Or if a lot of schools have bans on skateboards?

As someone who used to skateboard a lot, don't bother. Too much hate in the upper eschelons of academia (many do have bans), and if you're trying to learn in your 20s you have a high probability of injury. My $.02.

I like longboards. They're easier to ride and to control, they're more stable, can handle rougher streets, and you can go faster. It's super annoying to lug around tho. I don't really like original penny boards, though nickel boards are not bad. I don't mind skateboards, but they're not as smooth of a ride and I like to go fast. Also, the best place to ride these things are bike lanes!

Now will this be useful for med school? Prob not. You'll more likely drive or take public transit to school. And med school won't be like college where the building you need to be at are 4/5 blocks away from each other. (Edit: or at least this was the case for the handful of schools I've interviewed at)
