I am a freshman at binghamton university very determined to get into dental school in the future. I plan to major in chemistry and am really interested in it. So far I have gotten through one semester of college. I only took 12 credits (3 classes) since I came in with 12 credits from APs. I had intro Bio, intro Chem, and a Writing class. I got an A in chem, B+ in bio which I'm not too ecstatic with and was shocked to find out I got a B in writing. I've never gotten a B in my life, rarely anything lower than an A through H.S., though apparently college is a completely different story. I'm trying to get the grade changed in my writing class and do some serious complaining, considering I thought I produced A quality work the entire time and was never told anything else. I don't know how much of a chance I have at getting a higher grade but I'm definitely gonna try.

My point is in the long run, it's one grade and it is just a writing class. I plan to get A's in mostly everything from now on and focus on sciences.
Any advice on what I should do to help me with pre-dental? I have struggled and stressed so much this semester only to finish with a 3.43 because of a class that I thought I didn't even have to worry about. Thinking about it is driving me insaneee. I hope I have an easier time next semester although I don't know how I can manage things better than I have. I never had to study this much in HS. I need some solid advice!
Thank you!

Chill out. Don't let that B in writing get you riled up. You just started and have plenty of semesters to make up for your "subpar" grades. Also getting a 3.43 with such low course load is not that impressive. See if you can take at least 15 credits/semester with 2-3 science courses as adcoms will want to see that you can handle the 20+ credits in dent school.

As far as getting your grades changed? Oh man, you're one of those pesky and annoying little students that professors hate (then again if that's you in the picture, then maybe they wouldn't mind you coming). Just chill out though and relax. What you got and what you thought you deserve is completely different. own up to your grade and leave it at that. Try harder next semester.

I know it's not impressive, and I worked my ass off this semester despite how it looks. I have to get the grade changed, I don't care how annoying it is, because I know I did better than that and also my professor should've given me feedback on how I had done in that class if I wasn't doing that great.
But anyway, I'm taking 16 next semester and bio and chem again, hopefully I'll be able to get into the classes I want. It sucks to be a freshman and have to settle for pointless classes like writing and let it mess me up. Next semester, I WILL get a 4.0! 😡

Ok. If I were a professor, I wouldn't be concerned if a student is turning in B work. Your demands are just ridiculous. Like i said, chill out. If you make it into dent school, just expect an ass kicking from day one and a HUGE reality check if the next 4 years of college doesn't give you one.

errrrr
welll this class is structured so that you write essays, hand them in and get feedback and then you get to re-write them to the best quality they can be.
considering I re-wrote all my work a bunch of times, got it back saying it was solid or got it back on the last week of classes when it was too late to do anything else, my prof owes me an explanation.

Are you sure you can't get your mom to call and explain that it was A quality work?

No matter how many rough drafts and editing you go through, YOUR best quality may be a "B" in your professor's eyes. Remember this is college, not high school. The grading is usually stepped up a notch or 2. Also by the way, "solid" = B in my book. "Excellent" = A.

That may be true, but I still want an explanation. The grading system is so vague, it's unfair because if I knew it was that way I would've gotten help and tried even harder.

OMG a "B"...how are you ever going to get into dental school with that. Seriously though, I would just call your mom and have her complain and write you a note. That should work!

haaa
you guys are funny, but I just feel like if I can't get an A in this class, how am I ever gonna get an A in any other class. It's really the only thing I've got to base how I'm doing on so far. You know what I mean?

Relax. B's here and there won't end your dreams. I got a few C-'s here and there, and Columbia told me during the interview they didn't really care.

Good writing is hard to come by. Exceptional writing rarely exists. Go read some work by top students at top schools and you'll see the poor quality writing that even top students produce.

You dont happen to go to Rutgers do you? just curious

your science grades must've been really great then. i mean it's so competetive I don't know if I can do great in all the required stuff and I thought at least I can do well in this class but disappointment ;/
i feel like i'm just setting myself up for more and more disappointment.

nope I go to binghamton.

also my B looks extra bad cause I had only 2 other classes along with it.

you keep changing your pics. i likes!

Um duh! I read that at 1st, then came back into the thread just to read the replys and completely forgot.

Anyway, we have a class at RU called expository writing ("expos" for short) and SO many people were shocked by their grades. It was all about improvement and stuff... seems like people were better off writing poorly at 1st and just trying really hard to become somewhat coherent.... People who wrote really well found it difficult to move to the next level, so they would end up with Cs... It was really kind of BS..... but I took it over the summer (before i started undergrad) and it was kind of a joke... so I got an A, but I've heard the horror stories.

Anyway... Bs arent bad, And its not going to effect your sci GPA, I wouldnt lose sleep over it.

HAha!!! 😳

Easy there!!!! You're in a pretty decent position already compared to a lot of dental applicant.

As long as you're strong in your sciences, your other grades don't really matter. And a "B" is far from "bad". Many with C's and some D's have gained admission to dental schools.

All you need to do is keep up your determination and work that you've been doing, show interest in the dental field, kill the DATs, and you should have a letter of acceptance in your hand after applying.

As long as you're convinced that you'll be successful, you'll make it! 👍
So chill out about the B and just focus on your upcoming semesters as others say.

Good luck and peace.

maybe you're just not a born writer... but anyways... a B is average... which is good still... I got B's in all my writing classes... so i don't see why one B in writing affect your chances of getting in to dental school. so cheer up!!!! you'll be fine in the rest of your semesters!!! just really do well in ur sciences... that's wat d schools care about anyways. 🙂 good luck!!!

One B is not going to hurt you in the long run... 10 Bs won't hurt you in the long run... Besides, its classes like English and Writing where you just have to suck it up and get through it, they're obnoxious. Science courses there is a right and wrong answer, none of this subjective grading BS, so if that's where you soar, then you'll be just fine.

It's your first semester of freshman year, have some FUN, drink illegally, meet new people, worry about dental school after your first 2 years - they always say they want to see an upward trend 😉

I'm going to be harsh. This is college. You need to suck it up and accept the grade your professor felt you deserved. You're an adult right now and you need to act like one, instead of whining to your professor like a child. Life won't always go your way and you just need to accept it and move on from it.

Listen to everyone's advice and RELAX. It is ONE class out of MANY...hardly significant. Use it as motivation to do better in the future. A B is not the end of the world! Plenty of Dental students were admitted with Cs on their transcripts. Take a heavier course load next semester and shoot for all As. Many DS are pleased to see an upward trend in student's grades.

The average GPA of incoming dental students is ~3.5. Surely they had a few Bs thrown in there, or worse! 🙂

My little freshman buddy, you are already way ahead of the game. I didn't start paying attention to dental till my senior year of college.

Honestly...................

Take a CHILL PILL ok?? I know a good number of people from my school with like a 3.2, 2.9, 3.1 or..3.4ish GPA got into dental schools. Do they have AMAZING DAT scores?? Not really!!! It goes from 18 - 21. Do they go to schools like Harvard, UCSF?? No...but hey, they're in dental schools.

It's all about how much you want it. If you have like a 3.4 - 3.5, a 20 on the DAT with bunch of community service hours, dental experience hours, and most important of all....leadership positions. You're gonna be a competitive candidate. Oh ya, write a killer personal statement as well.

I mean..it's great you got all A's in high school, but from my personal experience. College is like 20 times harder than HS.

I was a 3.6 GPA student in high school, that's pretty good for not doing ANYTHING. I took my EXACT same study approach to college. Guess what. I got a 2.32 my freshman year👍 Doing exactly what I was doing in high school. It took me 2 years before I figured out how to study in collge and got my first 3.7 at san diego state.

Don't stress out too much!! Just do your best and don't pick BAD professors!!!!!They can make your life a living hexl.

Hello Binghamton freshmen, I don't think you really have anything to worry about, even if the professor is not willing to change your grade. B in a writing class does not matter that much, but seriously, the biggest issue here is that you should really take more credits per semester. I have gotten many B's in my college career but got invitations to 10/11 schools that I applied to.

So, I would say just try to take more credits per semester with at least 2-3 science courses, and considering it is your freshmen year, you should really relax. I am sure in your next 3 years, more Bs will probably show up, but you can prove me wrong.

And if that is you in your profile picture, I would say, even if you ended up with a 3.0 gpa, you have nothing to worry about! Dental schools love pretty people!

i'm a senior at binghamton and can tell you matter of factly that you have nothing to worry about. i definitely suggest making an appointment to talk to dr. langhorne (the pre-health advisor) when you get back to school- he'll give you a more rational view on how to approach the next couple years as a pre-dental student.

Hey !...Don't let that B get you down. It was your first semester of college , so sometimes its just a matter of making an adjustement to the different environment. And I know exactly how you feel , because I recieved a grade of C in my biology 1 class. I thought , there is no way I am goin to be able to get into dental school if I can barely pass Bio 1. And how am I ever going to pass any other biology classes ?... You just have to get re-focused and work hard. Ever since then , I made A's in genetics, cell, anatomy & physiology etc...So trust me, it can be done. Just don't let it get you down. I had a 3.3 GPA after my first year, and I have brought it up to a 3.7. So you have PLENTLY of time.

Good luck to you in the future !!

wooo
i ended up getting the B changed to a B+ and i made all A's this semester in Chem 2, Comparitive Lit, Creative Writing, but probably a B+ or A- in Bio 2 still waiting on it.
also i'm gonna be on the e-board for the pre-dental association next year, got a job tutoring chem at school and i'm shadowing in a few weeks yay me! 😀

I wouldnt trip about grades at all. I have 4 B's total which came from the most BS classes lol! Political Science, Speech, Philosophy, and Cell Biology. (cell bio i understand). You have so much time to keep your GPA up. You have only 12 units. You will be fine.
