our school requires us to take step 1 by the end of June. If we take it after, we have to miss the first rotation. Instead of the vacation time we get in 4th year, we do that missed rotation instead.

I'm having trouble hitting the 210 mark on my nbme practice exams, and I'm beginning to think that two extra weeks might do wonders for me. Yes, I'd probably pass if I take it, but it's still a risk. Frankly, I think I've already made up my mind to do this.

Do residencies look at when you took step 1? do they care if it was 2 weeks later than everyone else, or that you missed the first rotation?

Here's what it boils down to. I am 95% sure I can get my score up by at least a solid 10 points. Let's say hypothetically those 10 points were guaranteed: would you take them and skip the rotation, or would you just go ahead and take the exam so you can start year 3?

thanks in advance for your thoughts

I believe that with effort and the given time anything can be done. With three weeks yes you can definitely improve if you push 10-12 hours a day. Only think sucks is that you won't get a vacation (if I understood the circumstances correctly), but after you get your score back it will be all worth it ha!

Best of luck to you!

I would skip. But do make a very strict studying schedule. It's all about the score. I dont think they care about when you write it as they have all sorts of applicants from all over the world with different schedules.

This. How are they possibly going to know when the school wanted you to take it? Every school, even in the US, is on a slightly different schedule. Ask one of the deans at your school whether your postponement will go in your letter.

If you are not 100% sure that you'll pass, it's a huge risk to take the test. A fail will really screw things up.

Word. Thank you both. I will make sure I ask if it goes into the letter or not in tomorrrow's email to the dean then, just to be on the safe side. Yeah, I can't say that if I take it right now, I'm sure that I will pass. Also, my scores haven't plateaued at all yet, so I am positive that I can reach the practice scores I'm aiming for.

I'm definitely with you on the strict schedule thing. I will be making one and sticking with it.

Thanks again👍
