The Skype Sessions is not active at the moment
(5/16/2012). I will not have time this summer to organize the minigroups and other sessions, but if you are interested in restarting the group, let me know and I can help you get started. Be prepared to give 1-2 hours/day to help people get oriented, organize the groups, and to get people involved.
----------------------------------------------

The Structure of the January Groups:

Or, the windows you will see if you join the Skype Group.

  • January Troopers - our main group
General area for chit-chat and for study questions and answers, only January MCATers see this group
  • MCAT Study Group Updates - bulletin board
Used by me to announce updates and the general status of the group. Also used by others to announce various ongoing sessions ("We are going over EK 101 Test 5 in five minutes"), and to reply to updates
  • Relaxation Station - chit-chat area
Used by everyone, both January and Summer members, for general chit-chat. Anything non-MCAT related
  • MCAT Study Group 3 - study area
Unused so far. Most likely to be used for the minigroup sessions, although we will see how everything develops.

So we were discussing in this thread of maybe starting a Skype chat session once a week, where we can discuss whatever questions or difficulties we had with passages, concepts, etc. No webcam required, in fact I was thinking of just text-chat sessions although video camera sessions can be set up as well if needed. For multiple videos in one session, someone will have to have a Skype+ account (I do not).

For the sake of organization here's a new thread.

Could whoever was interested list preferred days/times (with time zone)? I'll try to set up a weekly schedule.

May 28, this Saturday, at 1pm (EST)

Edit: clarified some stuff above.

Edit2: my skype is sc4s2cg. Feel free to add me, or PM me your skype and Ill add you. Either way is fine.
Edit4: Added info to top
Edit5: There is no official meeting. Just drop in and start askin'. Chat is open 24/7. (Deleted Edit3 about weekly meeting)

Ok, so I have been so busy studying and skyping away I haven't been here since! I absolutely LOVE our skype study group. I am non-trad so doing this on my own can be lonely and at times discouraging. Having the MCAT family there 24/4 is really great. We ask, we answer, we teach, we listen, and always have a great time! The verbal group is really nice because we not only do the tests at the same time but we also discuss them (voice optional) all the questions are read and discussed. We have also broken groups down to Bio Chem and Phys. for specific Q and A , and just added a "Hat trick" group, works kind of like SN2er...love that! Its a game, we relearn, and relax at the same time. For the different test dates we have a July, Aug...groups so that the new comers will continue on, and the ones that have taken it can still contribute...or just chill..LOL!

Most of all we give each other support and courage to continue on with the battle!

Great job P!

We are online 24/7. Just logon whenever you can and ask/answer away. 🙂

I've said this everywhere, and I'll say it again. I highly recommend this group to anyone studying for the MCAT.

If you like answering people's questions,
If you have lots of questions on material,
If you need motivation to study,
If you want to be scared out of your mind by other preparers in real-time (lol, just kidding),
If you want to go over content and make sure you got every piece you need to the puzzle...

The Skype Group has it all. Check out the first few posts in this thread to figure out everything the group has to offer. You can add the OP or me (MDminded) and we'll help you get started. 🙂

If you have specific questions, PM me!

Updated OP with info on how active each of the subgroups are. Also, our next verbal meeting time.

I'll be on to (try to) answer any of the PS questions ....

ID is xispec

I love it when technology can be used for more than just social networking.
Wish I had known about this... my only friend was the library security guard and my blackberry during my MCAT studies PhD.

@chipo Skype names can't have spaces in them. Is that one word?

Hi,

Because Skype was not sending some messages, I moved around 15 people who did not log on in a while/at all from the MCAT Study Group 2 to a separate window. Those 15 have been removed from the study group window, but are still in every other window.

Let me know if you are one of them and would like to be readded.

Hey guys,

I was wondering if you have room for one more? I recently took the MCAT and I got a 31Q (14BS, 12PS, and a damn 5VR). I'm back studying and plan on retaking within the month as I haven't forgotten much which is fortunate.

I'll be more than happy to help anybody out in the sciences.

Just to keep SDN community updated on the state of our skype group...this was our latest announcement in the Update Window:

=====================
7/8 Read everything between ... this
=====================

1) --- EVERYONE --- To avoid ruining AAMC FL's for people who haven't taken it yet, use this format by using :

* (wait) AAMC FL # (wait)
* get the smiley by typing ( wait) with no spaces

2) --- TALK GROUP --- PM Peter or Jeslyn if you are interested in the next round of review sessions using www.mcat-review.org. (We made a new group, so we don't call people who don't wanna do it anymore)
* We'll begin TOMORROW (7/8) at 7 pm EST/6 pm CST/4 pm PST.
* We will cover Translational Motion, Force and Motion, Gravitation, Equilibrium and Momentum, and Work and Energy.

* Highly suggest that everyone take at least 3 physics passages on those topics. We will discuss them as they come up on the website.
* Please remember Skype has a limit of 25 people to call at a time, so if we start reaching that number we will have to take non-participators off. 🙂

3) --- VERBAL GROUP --- We are meeting 7/12 to review TPRH passages 29-36

4) --- FL GROUP --- Remember we are reviewing Kaplan FL 1 on 7/12 at 12pm EST

=====================
7/8 If you don't read this….READ POINT 1

highly encourage everyone on SDN to go on and study through skype. best resource out there to study and actually learn stuff. learned more on there in 3 weeks than in 4 years of college LOL

TIR: Steps to getting a great score.
Written FOR MDminded (and any other lunatics like her) by MDminded.

1) Eat well. Don't eat BBQ chips for dinner. Eat a good source of protein or carbs (brain food) and some fruit throughout the day.

2) Sleep well. Get *your* necessary hours in. Whether it's 8 or 7 or 12, make sure you are fully rested. Your brain needs that time to recover from your massive study binges.

3) Eat chocolate. Exercise. Do whatever you gotta do to be happy and at peace and NOT demoralized by this test. It's way too easy to think you're stupid or you're going to fail or you're going to get a 20. But you know your stuff. You've been studying. So take a break if you can't even get through 3 passages without being exhausted.

4) DO PASSAGES. I know all the content in the world, but it means nothing if I don't know how to apply it. Passages give you that opportunity. And don't do them in order. Do them at random, so that you're not thinking "oh, it's in the EM chapter, so I have to use EM equations". Make yourself branch out and expand your knowledge and scope.

5) Don't get discouraged. Be ENCOURAGED. Many of us are taking difficult FLs, like Kaplan or TBR. Realize these are actually more difficult than what AAMC provides you with. You are giving yourself the opportunity to grow and learn and BEAT the beast. So if you get a low score, shake it off. Treat every FL as a new learning experience, a new set of rules and ideas to learn and prepare you for the real thing. And expect an awesome score in the end.

I think I just got added, but I'm not sure.

Can someone confirm this? Thanks.

Hey guys!

This sounds great! Can someone add me on skype?

Rabdel12

Also, when I log on, does the group show or do I have to do something? Thanks a lot!

Updated OP with meeting times.

Don't take the OP literally, it gets updated once a week or so. True update times can be found in the Update window on Skype.

^It says you are already added, both into my contact list and the MCAT Study Group 2 window. Can you see the window?

Interesting, an e-study group. Is it anything like the TV show Community?

Hi,

Most people have taken the MCAT already, but I am adding people who haven't been added you.

If you are interested in joining the (so far) 5-6 of us January people, let me know when you send me the Skype request.

Alrighty. I believe I got all 6 people who wanted in.

EDIT: Oh. Apparently my Skype Sessions - January thread was closed. Here is the OP from there. I will post this in the original OP as well.

Anyone interested? Format will be similar as the original Skype Sessions, but of course I anticipate a lot less people. We have 3 people so far.

No subgroups or anything. Two of us are planning to meet once a week to go over Kaplan/TBR/AAMC FL's throughout the semester. And that's the plan so far, we will see how this thing will evolve.

Of course, the January MCAT Study Group (Instantaneous Q/A) and Relaxation Station 2 (relax window from the previous skype sessions, some old timers keep in touch there) windows will both be up just as before.

Okay can someone tell me what you guys do. I read the OP but.

Do you just meet up on skype on a set date, and answer questions.

I basically need help keeping on track.

Basically, like the OP says, there are 3 main groups:

MCAT Study Group 2: you put up your MCAT-related study questions, and someone will usually respond. Then you discuss said topic/question

Relaxation Station 2: general chit chat

Update Window: Updates from me about the group, or announcements by anyone who is looking for some special group (for ex, someone announced that they would like to review material from a website on Tuesday at 9pm EST (this was a couple weeks ago). So then 6-8 people showed up)

January Troopers: January group, kinda a mix of the above 3, but specifically for January. Encourage each other, study, organize FLs/study sessions/etc.

There is no set times we meet. Most people have their Skype set on "Do Not Disturb" and are online most of the time, DND makes Skype not notify them of new messages but still be logged in.

EDIT: Updated OP with regards to January. If you would like to be added to January, let me know when you request to be my contact on Skype!

Added you two. Let me know when you accepted, I cannot add you to the groups until you are part of my contacts.

can you add me : vanemar29
i'm taking it in January
