Hello,

Thank you for taking time to read this and respond as well. I am currently a freshman in college on the pre-med track majoring in biochem. I am entering my second semester in the spring. I slacked off in the fall as I received an A in International Relations, A- in Intro to World Religions, C in Chinese I, C- in College Algebra, C+ in Macroeconomics, C+ in Psychology, B- in French Lit. These are pre-reqs for general education requirements I am fulfilling, so I will actually be starting chem, bio, and pre-calc this upcoming semester. My current GPA is a 2.6. My question is, what are my chances of getting into a DO or MD school if I get A's and B's from here on out and a 28 or higher on the MCAT? What will med schools think with the C's have in these classes of my Freshman year?

Thank you

Get as many A's as you can. Work hard. Don't look back. Unfortunately, they may or may not ask you why you had bad grades initially, but you can show them that you had an upward trend in GPA by getting good grades from here on out.

Start thinking about some EC's and volunteer work. Whenever you pick a few things, stick with them for 4-5 years. Adcoms want to see your growth within these EC's over time. Plus, it will be something to maybe talk about during your essays or interview. Who knows.

Good luck.

1) You have plenty of time to create a competitive application if you turn it around from here.

2) Provided you get great grades from now on, they'll see that you adjusted your learning style and got your head in the game. The C- in Algebra suggests you'll need another math course with a higher grade to redeem it, like Stats or the next higher level College math course at your school.

One bad year or semester isn't going to kill you. Get As and a 30+ on the MCAT if you want to be serious for any MD school. You want to be in the 3.6+ range for GPA. For DO, 25+ and 3.3+ will be fine.

Thanks for all the replies you guys. Question: do you guys recommend me taking College Algebra or since I'm only in Freshman year, I should be okay if I get A's and B's through the rest of college? Any replies would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
