from talkin to several friends at diff med schools it seems like every year it alternates bet a slacker class and gunner class.. so for example M1 and M3 are slackers and M2 and M4 are gunners... i found this very interesting.

now this is from what i saw/heard in about 4 schools.. 🙂 so what about other schools? do u see something similar?

i hope i am in the slacker class so that i can have fun and get junior AOA. 😎

Well - the class below me is a gunner class at undergrad - so I must be heading for a slacker class at med school. Cool.

I spent an extra year in the lab to avoid a gunner class.

Seriously, though, it's a common phenom (I can think of at least 4 schools in the NE/mid atlantic where I KNOW this is the case). I think it's generally true, though I've no idea why.

GO SLACKERS!

P

yup, it's true of my school too...I'm a proud member of the slacker class! 😀

Same way at my school. I'm in the gunner class, which has been depressing.

Same goes with my school. I'm in the gunner class.😀

I remember one slacker class at my school was so bad that the Dean actually referred to them as "The Shame of '94"

that's awful...and pretty funny that they're that infamous

good luck with that, SP....from what I hear the class above ours was a gunner class, which makes my class the slacker class, which makes YOUR class another gunner class. 😀

Although, we'll see what happens come August when we kiss P/F goodbye. 🙂

My class is a gunner class compared to the class above us. But what I find funny in our class is the unrealistic gunners that we have. There are a few people at the bottom of our class who swear they are going to do ortho, and then there a few others who are right in the middle who are doing Derm research this summer and one of them is thinking of taking a year off to do more Derm research.

My theory 🙂 : This might happen at some schools because second-years are very involved in reading essays and conducting interviews, but relatively few students from other years are involved (third & fourth years are out in clerkship, first years don't know enough about the medical school to be involved). Then the second years tend to prefer students who are more like them - gunners choose gunners, slackers choose slackers...

Ha ha! That is sad. Well I think I'm in a gunner class, which sucks cuz i'm such a slacker. 🙁

Well, if alternating years are the trend, then I think I am in for a gunner class. Damn it! I guess I will have to do my best to organize lots of social events, biking, skiing trips, etc. Maybe the gunners can still be turned to the dark side.

Anyone have some solid techniques for perpetuating a slacker class?

what year will you be graduating in? i will graduate in 2005. i do know for sure the class below me is a gunner class. i am not too sure about our class. since we are an accelerated medical program (umkc) it is hard to tell.

I agree with you, Canadagirl -- I think this exact thing happened at my med school. Unfortuntately, I was part of the gunner class.

On a slightly different note, now that I'm in residency, I've noticed that this trend has continued, at least in my program. But instead of slacker/gunner classes, the classes alternate between party class and anal/boring class. (slightly different, because everyone has to work really hard in the hospital, so there are really no slackers). I'm totally psyched, because my class is a huge party class -- it's such a difference compared with med school! (our program director even told us last year how proud he was of our classes' ability to have fun and get out -- I think he had been worried about the class ahead of us, and didn't want us to become like them... 🙂 )
