Haha, how do I say "several times" without sounding pretentious. Lived in the South for a few months as well.

I miss proper baguettes, jambon de pays, and vin bon marche. The rose where we lived was cheaper than bottled water.

Aww this is making me all nostalgic. That was the best experience of my life, but it's associated with a lot of sad memories 🙁
 
Did you work on your French while you were there? Seems like an obvious question but I've had several friends now who've studied abroad in France/Spain/Italy and gave up after a week.

No unfortunately I don't speak French. I just know the phrases I picked up while there to get me by. I went through a program at my university and our classes were taught in English. I had just always wanted to go there all my life, even though I studied a different language in school. Do you?

Unfortunately due to disuse I'm forced to say I "used to" speak french. I just haven't been using it consistently in the past couple of years, weekly I'll listen to music with french lyrics or listen to the news in french but holding a convo would be pretty rough right now. I did spend a month doing an immersion program there in the South, I learned more in that month than I did in years of classes.

You must have been pretty fluent if you can listen to the news and understand it, since they usually use more advanced vocabulary than what's used in conversation. I bet speaking would come back to you pretty quick.

i think that summer, plus jambon, cheese, etc would go better with any kind of cooled dry wine. It can be rosé as long as it is dry, which is not the norm.

Actually, it is the norm in France.(and the rest of Europe I believe).

Worst thing you can do is to dwell on it. I remember staying up for hours thinking about how tired I would be the next day and how I really needed to rest. Just try to think about nothing. Your brain falls into patterns of thinking where you think the same way about the same things.
 
What keeps me awake is worrying about.... everything in life. I've gotten much better over the years. One of the things that is most helpful to me is to watch a show I've seen several times before, like scrubs, futurama, dilbert, etc... They don't have anything on them that will keep me up and worried. I have the screen on the tv turned down in terms of brightness and contrast. As I'm watching the tv and not moving it gradually makes me sleepier. I'm in a dark room, and feel safe, I decrease the volume a few notches as I lay in bed. I put a sleep timer on, or my current tv automatically turns off, so it takes that extra step out. This routine helps my body be instantly associated with it's sleep time. I set several alarms on my phone as well so I won't have to check it a 100 times to make sure the alarm is set, since one of my alarms should function. If you're on your computer at nighttime or phone turn the brightness all the way down, too. You're making a routine that if it puts you to sleep at all your body might eventually associate with sleep every time.

Yeah I think worrying about various things and anxiety over school is partly what has been keeping me up, as I can't distract myself from these things anymore when I lay down to sleep. I've come to dread getting ready for bed and just turning my bedroom lights off brings on the anxiety lol. Only slept about 2 hours again last night. I really thought staying up the other day would do the trick. Gonna rely on some Ambien tonight so I'm not a complete zombie tomorrow.
 
Your body will sleep when you need it bad enough. Don't focus on it so much.

Best advice so far.
You just have to "mind trick" yourself that sleeping is not THAT important and just don't focus on it too much. You said yourself that you are starting to dread getting ready for bed. You're psyching yourself out of sleep...it's a horrible and vicious cycle. Instead, tell yourself that you WON'T sleep anyway and read a book or something. Try to actually stay awake rather than fall asleep. It's like home-made CBT to help you cure yourself of insomnia. Trust me.
 
Replace the dog in the comic with a pomeranian and that could "squee" you to sleep.

Similar to the counting sheep suggestion I focus on my breathing. You have to block out all other thoughts and just focus on the repetition but it works.

Favorite late night snack food: Dried fruit or chocolate (yay sugar)
