It seems to happen every year where I go to school, and this year is no exception. Any thoughts about this? As far as I know, the "affair" that is currently going on is 100% casual, and at least one partner has a significant other. I think it's a bad idea all around, at least wait til the rotation is over. And why settle for the intern...I say set your goals high and at least go for the 2nd year resident! Does this happen at all schools? If so, please dish!!

Screw that, go for the attending... that's a sure way to get a good grade.

You really should not do Dances with Interns while you are still working with them. Not only is it unethical, but if busted both parties will suffer severely.

Not that I'm privy to ALL the gossip going around here, but it has happened at least once that I know of (both parties are now gone). I cannot imagine having a casual sexual relationship with someone you work with; its really ripe for disaster and can distract from patient care. Oh well...I guess it livens up everyone's day.

you're lucky that I'm not rotating at your hospital, Kim. woof. 😎

As a current intern--and on behalf of interns everywhere--allow me to say:

Sleeping with your intern is both expected, AND appreciated!!!!

note: To those with no sense of humor........well, you know where to go......

Sleep with them.. when they can provide you with felatio or cunnilingus..

for those with questions see below! and get a sense of humor!

I know of at least one instance at my school too...in theory I think it's highly unethical and just plain wrong, but in this case everyone, including the attending, knew about it and just looked the other way. So maybe it's just accepted that extracurricular activities go on throughout the hierarchy? 😕

In any case, if you're contemplating it, I'd say no. You want to be remembered as the star student who dazzled the attending with his/her brilliance, not the one who .... well, you know....

A student slept with her *attending* at my school. And then she supposedly wasn't happy with the grade she got for the rotation.

Shoulda gone dow........ouch....no.....bad Boomer!! BAD BOOMER!!!!!!

He probably felt that his job was on the line. And if all she was after was a better grade, then she got her just desserts.

It's also possible that she did in fact deserve the better grade, and for whatever reason, the attending felt it necessary to prove to his colleagues that he was not showing her any favoritism. Med school is like a small town. The faculty are the ones who live there, and we're just visiting. People care a lot more about what their neighbors think than the opinion of someone who's just passing through.

It's not fair, but that's the way it is.

So says the resident that started the "I want to date my attending" thread.

Please tell me what program you are at, and ask your program director if there are any vacancies for PGY-III IM.

Just to be 110% clear, it was IS IT okay to date YOUR attending. As in the abstract, as opposed to the specific sense. I was asking strictly for informational purposes. So stop insinuating things Mustafa 😡

Seriously, though, I do think it's wrong to sleep with a superior, be it resident, attending, or whatever, as long as they are in a position of influence over you. It just carries far too many unethical connotations (undue influence, etc.), and I think it's better in the long run to be blameless when it comes to your intra-hospital reputation 😀

What about sleeping with the cafeteria lady? You know, the one that's about 55 years old, 324 lbs, with the huge seb. ker on her nose, that's always outside smoking and hacking when you're walking in through the side entrance to the hospital, The one who's always really nice to you and gives you large portions and kind of winks at you with her non-glass eye. Would that be unethical?

Unethical??? Not for most....but in your case, wouldn't this be incest?

I know....I'm an arsehole....

Incest? Maybe so, but I go to school in West Virginia, where incest is not only encouraged, it's enforced!

Well, if you're going to sleep your way to the top 👍 , you've got to start somewhere--unless you just have a hair-net fetish--which is cool, too...I guess.

Oh Jesus, I have family in WV.....you have my sympathy.

Feel free to email me when you're ready to get that extra toe removed....I can recommend a good surgeon (although, most FPs in WV are probably experienced enough in this regard.......)

Hey there,
Go for the department chairman. They smell better and dress better too. Is sleeping with your intern the mark of a "full-service" medical student? Hmmm, I don't know how the interns in your hospital have this much time. It seems to me that the interns at my hospital are pretty busy and when not busy, they are unconscious.

I did hear of an attending who made some unwanted advances to a very attractive medical student. She reported this incident to the clerkship director who took the matter very seriously. The intern could find himself or herself out of a job. It can get messy and embarassing for the parties involved. Do you really want to be voted the "Most likely to be arrested for lewd acts" at graduation?

Let's face it, sex and violence does make the rotation more interesting. 😀

njbmd

I know of a woman who was having an affair with the attending. I didn't like it because the attending treated her well but treated everybody else like garbage. I also met the woman's husband, who was a nice man.

The woman got pregnant and the husband shot her dead. He's in jail now. The attending moved away.

Don't do it!

Do it only if he/she is hot...and has money! And if he/she will be directly filling out your rotation evaluation.

Seriously, this is bad. Very bad. No f-ing way this can be Kosher bad. Person who is higher position of authority (resident/attending) is open to sexual harrasment charges from MS if he/she is so inclined to press charges. Person who is in higher position will also be taken to task for abusing teacher-student relationship that medical education is based on. In all probability, if some sort of stink comes up as a result of such a relationship, person who is in higher position may get fired...

Of course, if you two are interested in each other, nothing is wrong with dating AFTER your rotation is over. Many of my classmates were propositioned (generally by surgery residents) the day they finished their rotations!

Thoughts on hooking up with an intern as an MS-1? (he'll still be there when I'm rotating through his dept., that concerns me somewhat)

It wasn't straw that broke the camel's back. It was too much hump that did it. Achtung.

I don't think there's anything MORALLY wrong with dating an intern while you're an MS1. Happens all the time. But like dating a fellow employee, dating a fellow medical trainee has potential to become messy if it doesn't work out. What the hell though... you're not going to have time to meet anyone outside of medicine in the next 4 to 10 years!!!
