Slightly panicked, add another school

Alright I admit it I am having last minute jitters. I am applying to 4 schools, VMCAS already submitted and I am just finishing supp applications and sending off checks.

Now I am debating if I should add another school. The school I am considering does not have a defined DVM/PhD program like I really want but now I am thinking any vet school is better then no vet school at all... Also it would be out of state and they have a small class size with only 20 OOS admitted.

$ is definately a problem and the real reason I did not add them to start with.

Any thoughts...worth the abject poverty or just stick to the first 4 I have thought through and are confident with.

Honestly, I say go with your heart. Its fall outside and pretty. At this point you should look at your options and chances and think "what if I dont get into any of these schools?". A plan B helps soothe matters along with an ease to oneself. If you do end up choosing another school make sure its not A. gas not in car because applied to another vet school or no lunch today. Try to be sensible because no matter what people say being a veterinarian means you can make logical choices and if you cant begin with them then it makes things hard.
All in all, Relax. Choose another school if you see fit and just leave the process be for a couple of hours to have some time to yourself. The worst thing to do is to freak out during a deadline you know?
And just so you know I did add schools right up to my submission time, added some got rid of some it all is what fits in your life at the moment.
Also I believe stick with what you know and continue on with it.

The best advice I can offer is that you usually regret the things you DON'T do more than the things you do...do. I usually find this helpful in making decisions. What do you think you'll have a harder time with: the regret of NOT applying to that extra school, or the regret/monetary effect of applying to it.

Also - it's possible to add schools AFTER you've submitted VMCAS? I had always figured that once you submitted, that was it... What is the process for adding a school?

I dont think its possible but i know that you can apply to the Australian schools via paper by the deadline along with some of the UK schools mainly dublin. When I was going to apply to dublin they wanted me to go through this Mid-Atlantic service. I ended up not applying because I didnt get in contact with anyone or enough responses about its reliability.

i'd do it. i applied to 8. money was totally an issue...but i didnt want to put all my eggs in one basket, you know?

i have SEVERAL friends that only applied to 4 schools or less and didnt get in. and now wish they had applied to more.


good luck! and work your butt off b/c next summer you'll need to have money for the move to vet school! 🙂

I'm applying to 9, and I'm starting to convince myself that I should have added another 9, because I'm paranoid that way.

To the OP, you inspired me to add a school to my VMCAS this afternoon... It was a school that I originally had on my list before submitting, then crossed off when I decided to arbitrarily limit myself to 6 schools. I realized today that I probably WOULD regret not applying there, so I added it. I hope that inspires you to make the right decision for yourself, whatever it may be! 🙂

Okay.. so I read this post.. panicked.. and added another school that was on my list but I wasn't sure about before because of OSS factors etc.
Now I need to make sure those transcripts go out tomorrow

Thanks for all the advice guys. I wavered a lot but did decide to apply to the 5th school and feel better for it. As long as my undergrad sends out my transcript by tomorrow I should be good.

It was very funny as I asked my SO if I should apply to another school. And he instantly said no (he has no understanding of professional school and cannot understand why we have to spend so much $$$ to apply with no guarantee of acceptance). Then hs asked which school it was and I told him and he acted all surprised and asked why I didn't have them on my original list as they 'rock' much more then some of my other choices. Pretty much made up my mind right there😉

if i had the opportunity this year, i would have definitely applied to the school you added. i really like their equine/large animal program. but i wasn't going to be able to complete the physiology requirement. they are definitely on list of schools for next year! i'm glad you decided to add them!! i hope those transcripts get sent out! good luck!

ETA: i just realized that i combined one of your earlier threads (i think it was debating between iowa state and illinois) with this thread and for some reason assumed iowa state was the school in question. lol then read back to the beginning of this thread, after posting, and realized it was two different threads. so sorry! 🙂 ahhh applications have made me lose my mind! anyway, i'm glad you decided to add your 5th school and i hope it works out for you!

Yeah, I sort of decided to stay with applying to Penn at the last second, and had to priority mail the supp app card and check there yesterday, and am crossing fingers that if my transcripts are a tiny bit late I won't just get thrown out.
