I'm very fortunate to have a good number of interviews, and I would like to cancel one to open it up for others. I'm fairly certain I'm not interested in attending that program.

Today is Thursday, the 8th. The interview is next Friday, the 16th. Is it too late to cancel? I already rented the car and such, and it would be a great experience to check out the program, but I still appreciate that someone else might want it more. Keep in mind this program has a big packet of information that they'd need to put out in the mail for the potential new interviewee.

Thoughts? 8 days too close to the date to cancel?

It's never too late to cancel if you truly aren't interested in going to a progam. They may not be able to schedule another candidate for your particular interview spot, but don't worry. Every program has a 'goal' number of interviews to conduct each year (typically based on the number of spots and recent match statistics). If you cancel, they'll still reach their goal at some point.

Whatever you decide, don't ever ever just 'not show up' without calling first. That is a huge red flag and will get passed around to other programs.

If you are only "fairly certain" you don't want to go to the program, it may be worth a visit. Often people find that their preconceived ideas to go to X, Y, or Z program significantly change after they have interviewed.

And if you are certain don't waste your money and the program's time. bn

Advice much appreciated. Thanks! You're right- I'm not absolutely certain, and I think it's definitely worth a look.

Thx for the thread...on a similar note, if you have to reschedule an interview, will the program expect a reason? And if so...is honesty always the best policy? For example, I have program A scheduled for a particular date...but I want to schedule program B for that date and reschedule program A. Any advice much appreciated...

I ended up ranking the program #1 that prior to going to the interview I was "almost dead certain" that I was not going to rank. I am glad that I did take that interview now...

You don't need a reason. But if pressed, say the flight was cheaper (Won't work for your home program).
