I just, 2007 April 17 Tuesday, 15:34 PST, received my Kaplan Test Prep Books for their online course. I was prepared to receive brand new books, maybe with shrink wrap. The only thing shrink wrapped were the flashcards and the two other books were dog-eared for about the last twenty pages!

Psychologically, I had already been frustrated by all the mistakes I found - spelling, grammatical, and, of course, factual mistakes - in the Kaplan "blue book" (the common name on this site) 2007-2008 edition I'd been checking out from a local library. Now I paid a huge amount (more expensive than taking the DAT three times, which is what the Kaplan program offers, essentially, plus three paper exams) and I get some dog-eared books. Great. Even though I haven't looked through the stuff I've bought yet, I'm giving Kaplan a thumbs down: 👎

As for looking forward to the DAT, I am. Also, despite all my animosity towards Kaplan as yet, I look forward to taking as much from the course I paid so much for as I possibly can. I recommend everyone does the same for whatever junk they get thrown his or her way. I feel as though I am giving you fair warning so that you do not waste your money to institutions you don't trust to begin with, if you have not already. Thanks.

From another thread: I hope this isn't plagiarism or something...

Kaplan has multiple errors here and there just like probably most resources do. I've noticed a couple as well (in the classroom based material). I just double check what I think is the real answer with a professor or text and chalk it up to errors in reviewing. In one of my RC passages, one of the answers to the questions was listed twice (Choice A and Choice D), but you had to pick one. Most commonly my answer has been marked as incorrect on the score report, but when I go to the explanations, it shows a different letter choice for the answer. It is frustrating though..."

If you are unsatisfied with your kaplan material, you can call your local center and demand new material. Now keep in mind, your kaplan material isnt perfect, but when i used it i found it extremely useful. grammatical errors aside, why don't you first use the material for its content and practices before you pass judgment on product. I feel it is important to counter your fair warning with my own opinion. Kaplan is probably the best dat prep out there. Now i know there are other great supplements (topscore, achiever, destroyer), but kaplan provides a sturdy foundation to study and develop from. For the record, i used kaplan among other materials to prepare and i was satisfied.

That's what I said above. I only find Kaplan sloppy in its presentation and of poor quality in terms of customer service. As far as preparing for the dental admission test, I have only commented that Kaplan's shoddy in giving facts and also correct answers. That's all. I'm glad they served you well. What other dental schools did you get admitted to?

dude, least you got your kaplan stuff...it took 3 weeks, and SEVERAL phone calls for them to even see me in the system...but um yeah they had no problem charging my credit card the same day i bought it.

blue books, identical...well the one you just paid 1200 dollars for has test at the end of each section, other than that, same book you paid 65 dollars for at ye-local barnes and noble.

eh...i'm over it, overall i'm glad i bought it, the more practice i get the better.

but yeah i was upset too, i'm like ok this is KAPLAN...ok they are super respected, not some hole in the wall company...and then it's like, ok my test is in a few weeks, why did i wait a MONTH for my study materials...guess 1200 dollars doesn't cover timely shipping or shrink wrap.

Also, I did demand new material (the day I got the suggestion from Envision) and it still hasn't arrived. It most likely will not arrive until Monday, which pushes my plan back by one week.

-EDIT: They arrived just now! 17:30 PDT, 2007 April 20 Friday. Yay!

Lastly, when you first sign up with Kaplan, the books don't come until about one week later, though you can take the diagnostic about two days after signing up.

The lesson to not judge a book by its damaged-but-readable cover and pages rings very loudly in my ear right about now, though. I think this thread's good to be closed.
