I looked around for any info about this, didn't see much. I will be able to get my first SLOR from a PD in September, and second one in October. Is there a deadline for submitting SLORs to ERAS/wondering if these might be too late. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

The deadline is the application deadline through ERAS, which is Nov 1 for many programs, but the conventional wisdom is that you should look to submit your application more like early-to-mid October as some programs will look at your application before your dean's letter comes out (which is Nov 1 for everyone in the country). So any SLORs that you want to go out with your application must be in to your med school's office by Nov 1 at the very latest.

You can certainly get SLORs after Nov 1 if your application has already been submitted, and just submit them separately on ERAS or hand-carry them to interviews. But you will NEED at least one SLOR and 3 LORs total before you submit on ERAS for your application to be looked at by EM programs. Some programs require 2 SLORs.

You should make sure to get the SLOR in Sept, and if you want / need the Oct SLOR before submitting your application on ERAS make sure you make it very clear to the writer that it needs to in-hand at your med school administration office by the last week in October at the very latest (preferably earlier).

Hope this helps. Please let me know if this isn't clear and I can extrapolate further.

If I submit my application with 3 LOR's - 1 SLOR and 2 non-EM letters - is there any way to indicate that another SLOR will be coming?

I am in a similar situation. I plan on trying to get a second SLOR from my Oct rotation in as old boy suggested (i hope i can impress them soon and have a good letter in before the end of the month). I remember seeing a few residencies say on their site their deadline is Nov 1st but you can get them a LOR to them by Nov 15th as long as they know it is coming, don't remember which though.

So if an applicant has at least 3 letters total (2 LOR and 1 SLOR), as long as the residency doesn't specifically say they require 2 SLOR's then the applicant will be reviewed, correct?

Additionally when do most programs start sending out interviews? Is it only after the entire app is complete after Nov when all the deans letters come out?

Thanks

I think I remember reading that people were getting a bunch of interviews right after the dean's letters were released. They came so quickly that it seemed like the programs already had an idea but then just wanted to see the dean's letter first.

It depends. I got a couple in September after submitting my app the second week or so. The vast majority came in October, with just a few waiting until after the Dean's letter came out. Programs are actually supposed to wait until the letter comes out, but most of them don't.
