SLOR: Is it just the SLOR form that should be filled out or...?

Hi,

So I got two attendings to fill out the SLOR form for me. The EM secretary wanted to know if I should have the attendings write a proper letter in addition to the SLOR form. I didn't think so but I just wanted to make sure.

The whole point of the SLOR is so that the PD's only read that and save time, right? Or am I supposed to have them write a separate letter on their own letterhead as well?

I hope I'm making sense here. To be even clearer: does the SLOR replace the traditional LOR, or is it in addition to the LOR?

Thanks! Please let me know ASAP!

It replaces the traditional LOR. There is a free text area at the bottom where they can write their own comments. They should not also send a separate letter.

I agree, just the SLOR form. It kind of defeats the whole purpose of using SLORs if the attendings have to write you regular LORs too!

The SLOR is written by the PD though no? what about getting a traditional LOR from another attending? or should the other attending also fill out a SLOR?

any idea is the SLOR can be used for rotations other than EM? I have 2 SLORS and applying to a few IM programs as well. will those work or is it just for EM?

Are SLORs better to obtain than traditional LORs for EM applications.

SLORs are unique to EM. I don't know that IM programs would find them useful. Not to mention that using a SLOR when applying to IM would make it obvious that you are applying to EM as well.

Most EM residencies prefer (or require) the SLOR. The following is from "Advice for Emergency Medicine Applicants", written by Dr. Overton, program director at KCMS/MSU (Kalamazoo) Link http://www.kcms.msu.edu/node/164:

"Next, remember that all letters from emergency medicine faculty should ideally be written using the "Standardized Letter of Recommendation" ("SLOR") form developed by the Council of Residency Directors ("CORD"). Experienced EM faculty members should have this. If they don't know what you're talking about, you can find details on the SLOR at the CORD web site at http://www.cordem.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3284"
