Hey guys,

I will be attending SLU this fall. I just flew out there to look for housing and tour the city. If anyone will be attending SLU (especially regional interviewees) and needs advice for housing and such, PM me.

I found a great place to live about 2 blocks from the school for really cheap. 1br apt., all utilities included, including cable T.V. and free DSL for $575 total. The only thing you have to pay for is telephone (I use my cell phone exclusively). Also it's right next to a del-taco for the culinary challenged students 🙂

Also, I'd like to get to know any future SLU students who are on these forums so PM me if you want to chat.

Hi-
You should probably say if you are a guy or a girl if you are looking for a roommate. You also might want to be careful living that close to campus. From what I have heard it isn't the safest. That is just what I've heard though. I'm not sure where I will be going but I have been accepted to SLU. I will probably be planning a trip out so I can check out the school because I was a regional interviewee.

Are you talking about the apartment building right behind Del Taco on Grand? My mom actually lives there, and to be honest, it is NOT a safe neighborhood. You won't necessarily have trouble (my mom has never been mugged or anything), but a lot of people do; there are a lot of assaults and drug sales in the area. So definitely make sure you know what you are getting yourself into... I think South Grand can sometimes be safer than North Grand (but don't quote me on that). You might want to look around a bit more - there is a LOT of very affordable housing (in nicer areas) around the city.

I am male, 23 yo, but not looking for a roommate for this year. Just wanted to talk to people who are going to attend and get/give advice i guess. The place I was looking at was Grand View Towers. It is behind the del taco but it didnt seem unsafe at all. There was a full-time security guard and the building is a 17-story high-rise with an elevator and there is only one, coded entry, so at least inside the building seemed safe. It had just been bought by a property management company who is remodeling it and adding a game room, fitness center, etc., and the leasing office personel were extremely nice.

I asked the SLU admin about the apt building and they didn't discourage the idea or say anything about it not being a safe area. Actually, they said that the situation is improving and the police have been cracking down on the drug sales around the school, forcing the dealers to go elsewhere. I hope this is the case. It really seemed like one of the safer places that I looked at. Right next to the medical campus there are other apartment buildings but they looked like prisons with tall iron gates surrounding it. I imagine the problems immediately next to the campus are worse.

If you know of any other places or any comments, please share.

I went to school in St. Louis from 1990-1993 and lived in the Loop the whole time -- a 1 BR apt on Delmar across from Blueberry Hill. I just drove back through there last month and I was amazed at how much the Loop has changed, and even MORE amazed at the changes on Delmar just east of Skinker. It used to be a real slum, but it looks like they are doing a good job of revitalizing the area.
