Hi all! I am currently deciding between SLU and VCU and would appreciate any input.
I am hoping to go into a competitive specialty like ophthalmology or surgery, although I am not 100% sure yet.
SLU:
Pros:
- 200K scholarship (tuition ends up being ~$24,000 per year)
- New hospitals
- P/F pre-clinical, unranked for 1.5 years
- Have received very positive feedback from students about their experience
- Closer to home
- Some NBME exams
Cons:
- Not very excited to be in St. Louis
- Some in-house exams
- Not the strongest research
- AOA
VCU:
Pros:
- Strong academic center & research
- Solid reputation & matches
- Seems to be ranked higher? Though I am not sure how much this matters
- P/F pre-clinical for 1.5 years
- Really prefer the east coast
Cons:
- In-house exams
- No aid, would need to take out more private loans (tuition is ~$65,000 per year)
- Further from home
- AOA
Summary: Logically SLU is better financially, but is it worth more money for VCU if interested in a competitive specialty?
