  1. Veterinary Student
Hello,

I am a third year veterinary student and I am trying to plan my externals for my fourth year. I am interested in doing an internship following graduation. I am looking to gain more experience in Neurology, Dermatology, and Ophthalmology since these areas are lacking at my school. It would also be nice to have a Cardiologist and Radiologist around. I was wondering if anyone has any specialty clinics or schools that they would recommend? I am open to going to any area of Canada or the US.

Angell Animal Medical Center (www.mspca.org) is a great place to try any of those departments.

VCA VRA in gaithersburg, MD has all but derm (cardio is in the building through another company). they have an internship and residency program as well

VCA SouthPaws in Fairfax, Va (previously known as just SouthPaws, we recently got bought by VCA) is also good. We have holistics, oncology, ER/ICU, internal medicine, radiology, opthalmology, surgery, and neurology. We have an intern program, no residency program though. Always have a ton of externs coming through the hospital, especially lately! I currently work there in the ICU as a nurse -- we have a great caseload, 15000-18000/year according to VIRMP, which is great for a private practice.

Not to sound super creepy or stalkery, but I've been trying to guess where you work knowing you work emergency/ICU in the DC metro area and was guessing it had to be one of three places (two in this thread + FHA), but, haha, mystery solved!
Also, I didn't know you guys got bought out by VCA, interesting...

You could do rotations at OVC - they have all of those specialties you listed

I will put a plug in for my school and say that NCSU has boarded clinicians in all of the specialties you listed. Plus the hospital is brand new and shiny and has all the coolest toys. 😉
