Hey guys,

I was wondering if having big hands would make being a surgeon impossible? I have large hands and i don't want that to be the reason i won't get into the specialty i want. Does it matter?

All constructive and appropriate responses welcomed.

Thanks.

your freshman college classes need to start. NOW.

Srsly, I'm beginning to get a little worried because i'm doing my CNA course and the Red Cross doesn't have any gloves that can fit me properly. Even the XL ones takes a little while to get on.

As long as you can handle precision tools, I don't think you would have much of a problem. Maybe tying knots (especially vasculature)?

You would have to wear gloves as an internist anyway, so gloves should not be a reason to avoid surgery.

Bro it doesn't matter really...there are plenty of surgeons with big hands. The gloves you wear in the OR aren't the same as you wear with the red cross...they will have more sizes in the OR, you shouldn't have trouble putting them on.

This should be the least of your worries at this point.

I'm neurotic... I am sure of that. But you? I think you take the cake. You are asking if your hands are too big for something that is 8 years away. Please just relax 🙂 it'll be okay.

Does being a male or female make you a better surgeon? I'm kind of worried because I see a ton of males operating, so I think it's because they're better, right? Should I get a sex change now?

ok, i came off as kind of an ass, but its not a big deal. I was talking to a reconstructive plastic surgeon and he mentioned that he could make a lineman a top notch surgeon if he trained him. the point is if you have hands and the work ethic, you can do it.

Surgeons as a whole tend to be fairly large. You're fine.

You should be wearing gloves no matter what the specialty....don't worry you'll be ok. I'm sure there exists a doctor/surgeon out there with bigger hands than you who does just fine.

Dude I know has massive, hulk-like hands and he's a retina surgeon (read small, delicate maneuvers). You'll be fine, chill

I'm an amateur piano player. I'm assuming I can just walk into a hospital to get my license?

Am I the only one who thinks Verum is a troll?

I think the real question is whether having a wife and kids gives you better dexterity as a surgeon.

It's not the size that matters....but how you use it. 😉

I couldn't help myself, had to say it.

This guy is actually a high school student?....asking these questions?

Who knows what he is. I think the high school bit is just part of his act. His last few threads have pretty much proven he is a crafty troll. But like all trolls, he gave in to his sick addiction and went too far and made one too many threads proving what he really is.

I'm being serious. I was reading a post on yahoo answers and it said small hands were better for surgeons and no i am not a high school student. I graduated in june.

Having attempted at one time to instill a level of order and validity to the pre-med section of yahoo answers, I can assure you that it is an utterly unreliable source of information populated by only one decent answerer (a PA) and many people with no medical experience that are just answering wildly in order to increase their post count.

A legitimate source used often for high quality research.

I wish my hands were larger. It would make playing Rachmaninoff more enjoyable. 🙁

wait, so he is still pre-UG? not even legit pre-med?

This thread is silly....

That site has some of the most brilliant minds known to man.

You need the t-rex proportions to be a surgeon. Massive body and tiny, pointless arms? Checkmate, you're going to be a world class surgeon.

Don't have the t-rex proportions? Give up. Become a blogger. You're halfway there with all of these threads, emptying out every thought that pops into your mind.

You can special order magnum sized gloves.

But I can't wait for you to start school.

Effing best reply ever!!!!!!

Hahaha

Even if Verum is a troll (99% certain he is) its ok because his stupid threads turn out some of the greatest tangents

I can palm a basketball and the XLs fit just fine. You probably have sweaty hands. This makes getting gloves on a chore. If you have a liquid nitrogen dewar around anywhere go open it up and stick your hands in the air above the liquid for a bit. This will dry them right up 😉 (McDonald's style disclaimer: dont actually touch the liquid nitrogen... only the cold air inside the dewar 😉)

Oh little one... Just FYI graduating high school is not even the halfway point on the education road to becoming a surgeon.

5$ says OP quits premed after the first semester and uses those hands to become a professional bowler.
