SMDEP is a free summer enrichment program for predent/med freshmen and sophomores. Sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, SMDEP is a free 6 week Summer program intended to help students from economically/educationally disadvantaged backgrounds and from ethnic/racial underrepresented groups in dental/medical field become stronger medical/dental school applicants. The best candidates for this program also express a great interest in health care issues affecting the underserved population.

I was fortunate enough to attend in Summer 2009! And I can tell you that during the 6 weeks, not only you will make lots of friends and get mentorship from a dentist/doctor and from dental/medical students, but you will also get exposure to public health advocacy and become a more culturally competent future health care provider by exposure to the health care disparities in our communities. Not only that the program is free to attend, but they even pay for your travel expenses, room and board, plus a small stipend. Check out your eligibility for this program.
The application is now open so make sure you look at its prerequisites (letters of recommendation, not having 60 semester/90 quarter credits yet, ignoring AP credits, etc.) Apply early! Although they deadline is March 1st, they do rolling admissions, so you get better chances to get in by applying early. The application is sent to a main center, and from there distributed to each of the schools you chose from their list of 12. The decisions are made by each school, so the more schools you chose to have your application sent to, the better chances you have. Good luck with your application!
