SMDEP Concern
Will applying to SMDEP within the first week of January be early enough?
I really don't care which program I get into as long as I get into one program. Are these following choices reasonable, UCLA, Washington, and UT Houston?

GPA Concern
Do I have a chance at med school? I only took gen chem and other electives during my freshman year and ended with a 3.6 GPA but got B's both semester (Calc was an A). This semester, I took bio and ochem and got B's in both and my GPA dropped down to 3.54. Do I have any chance at med school with only B's in my pre requisites? I so far have 4 B's (all coming from science) and the rest are A's and A-. Please help.

UCLA is a no-go unless you are from a community college.
Washington is pretty competitive-- switch out for Nebraska or Kentucky
UT-Houston- a GREAT site!

It depends if you are a URM or if you fit the mission of the program.

I believe there is already one SMDEP 2011 thread. Can't all these subsequent threads regarding timing of application, gpa, lors, blah blah be posted within that thread?

Well some people don't answer people's questions and skip it

i am asian. is that URM. also, is my gpa a big concern? Is it a good idea to write a essay about how my parents became successful and how that has influenced me?

being asian is not considered URM (sadly) 🙁 but even though you're not URM doesn't mean you can't apply. if your essays show something your gpa doesn't, go for it.

False. I attended the UCLA program and I've never attended a community college. There were also other students who were from state/private colleges. There were those from community colleges, but definitely not the majority.

However, I agree that they do look out for students who fit the mission of the program. While SMDEP is national, the sites are not clones of each other.

Would submitting the application within the first week of january be considered early? How important are the essays?
