Smdep?!
Started by AJS27
which site are you doing it at?
I did mine at UW.
The experience was really great.
Meet new predents, meet dental faculty members, and hands on experience.
I shadowed a dentist once a week.
Also great prep for DAT and they provided me with the whole sets of Examcracker MCAT book. I think you will like it.

I'm going...but I don't know to which school yet. It's really hard to choose! Have you guys heard if any school is better than another as far as pre-dental students are concerned?
How was Nebraska and Washington? Those are two of the ones I have to choose from...???

I did SMDEP in 2006 at Columbia. It was the second best experience of my life! Every week, we had a little seminar w/ a specialist within dentistry. We took physics, bio, calc, and organic. I think once a week there was a lady who gave a class on how to better your gpa. We also went around NYC to different clinic sites. There were weekend excursions such as a boat ride on the Hudson, the Body Exhibit, etc. The best part of the whole thing for me was meeting all these smart talented people. It made me come back ultra motivated.
We also did dental stuff such as making casts/working in the wet lab, and drilling.
Anywho, you will meet some of the best people ever and will go out A LOT!! Hopefully, those of you that go will come back to your respective schools as motivated as I did. When you go, and get into dental school afterward, dont forget to write thank you notes to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation!!

Nope just don't apply too all the most competitive schools.
I'm convinced that the only reason I got into UNC was because of the MED program.

hey sarah_bellum,
did you participate in SMDEP and MED programs?
if so, which did you find was a better over all experience?
also, which do you think get you a better insight into the field of dentistry?
thanks for any input!
I never did SMDEP. I'll say that MED was extremely rigorous - it's for pre-med AND pre-dents. The pre-dents have to do everything that the pre-meds do, plus an additional intro to dentistry course. The science coursework is taught mostly by med school faculty for roughly 35 hours/week. The dental coursework involves basic dental anatomy, dental methods, and materials. You get to take a couple of evenings in the SimLab and do some preps and restorations on typodont teeth.
I LOVED it. A great chance to meet people from all over the country. If you finish in the top 10 or so, it can really give a bump to your app to UNC (or many other places). I cannot recommend it highly enough.
I did SMDEP at Howard and it was one of the best experiences. We had class from 8 to 4ish monday thru thurs and every friday we had clinical rotations just shadowing different residents in different departments at the dental school. It was a great experience!! and I got a recommendation from one of the directors of the program.
Aw man, I got really excited about this after reading this thread, but I checked out the website and it says the program is only for freshmen and sophomores.
I'm a sophomore right now, but I have to take summer classes this coming summer to graduate on time. I'm not applying until my senior year, though (taking a year off), so you think they'd let me in as a junior? Or are they strict about that?

I think they're pretty strict about it. At Louisville's program (every one of them are different), we actually received credit for the class we took. It was only 3 hours though, so that probably wouldn't help you with the classes you need to graduate on time.

Do you think that the dentistry programs are easier to get into than the medical?
Do you think that the dentistry programs are easier to get into than the medical?
yeah probably since there aren't nearly as many ppl applying for the dental positions.
they sometimes have to extend the deadline to get enough dental students.
i am going to new jersey............................................
anyone else? I'll be seeing you then!🙂
im going to ucla. Is anyone else going with me??
Hey everyone, I'm a former SMDEP'er from a couple years ago and i'm currently on top of a couple waiting lists waiting for 2014 admission... But anyways, I attended Houston and it was definitely the best choice I ever made, i applied late too if I can remember correctly and am not exactly a minority ... So my advice is to definitely look into the houston program because I dont think they get many dental applicants as others.. SMDEP in general is hands down the best summer program you can do to prepare for dental/med school

What's the average gpa for those that got accepted to smdep?
has anyone gotten accepted when they applied the summer after their junior year?
When is the best time to apply?
Best time to apply is anytime before February 1st. I don't think they accept students for the summer after their junior year. I know that the sites look at your application and so each put stress on different parts of your application: GPA, LORs, extra-curricular, test scores, how disadvantaged you are, etc. So there really isn't an accurate "average" gpa that could be produced.
