For the SMDEP program, regarding the teacher rec form, the one they provided online is pretty simple, (rank the student in terms of maturity, intellectual ability) but it says "professors may send in an additional letter". Does sending that additional letter boost chances by a lot? I'm new at the school and most of my classes are huge lecture classes so I haven't gotten to know my professors too well, and also since school has kind of just started... What should I do in this situation, how can I get to know my professors if I don't have a question?

Also, does anyone know if certain schools receive fewer applications, or are they all approx. the same?

I think you should contact the specific school that you are applying to and I'm sure that they would be happy to talk to you. Columbia's Office of Diversity is extremely helpful and they are always willing to take time out to help students like us. If you do decide to send another letter, versus having a prof. send it, can you have you adviser send it? I have had plenty of success with my adviser and feel that he has a better overall knowledge of me as a person versus someone who's class I took once. Good luck👍
