Hey, just wanted to know your opinion on whether the smoke/black tubing cardio iii or the all black will look better. I wanted to get a fancier finish (like brass) but I heard that attendings will judge you pretty hard for steths that stand out too much.

Ugh, I sure hope not. I got a stethoscope that stands out a bit so I can easily find it especially if I let someone borrow it.

By stand out, I think they mean like neon pink.

My stethoscope had a bright green diaphragm and bright green earbuds. I usually got asked about it because it was unusual, but never "judged".

@Brain Bucket lmao sorry I'm just a peasant. it's good to hear that attendings/patients don't care all too much about color (though i am going to avoid brighter colors)

The biggest problem, in my opinion, is not the ostentatiousness of your stethoscope or the color, but preventing it from being stolen.

Seriously this is a real issue in every hospital I've been in so please do not spend an exorbitant amount of money on a fancy scope. Or do like your colleagues and get it in an obnoxious color that no one else will want.

I got the all black and like how it looks. Not that I got it for this reason, but I got a lot of compliments on it (u mirin?).

Never understood the fear of having a steth get stolen. How does that happen? I suppose after hearing these stories prior to starting third year it made me vigilant of always keeping it on me. Even on surgery when it would be left in my white coat hanging somewhere, though, it would still be there when I got back. I'd recommend getting it engraved if you're worried about thievery. It'll cause someone to think twice before they take it if they see your name on it. Back in the day, Steele would do it for $15 or so - pretty cheap if you consider it an investment and tool for your training (less than $200 total for a new Cardiology III engraved = good deal IMO).

Speaking of, I'm going to get mine engraved to help with the whole theft thing. I hear most people keep the same steth for years after finishing school, so would it be stupid to get it engraved with "Dr Whatever"? Would that make me look like a tool?

Nah it's cool just make sure you the gold plated chestpiece model.

I ended up with a Cardio III because it's better for someone with hearing issues. If someone wants to criticize me for being hearing disabled, it won't be the first time. 🙂

Perhaps you were more careful than most but I've and my friends had ours stolen during medical school and residency and Ive had patients steal them from the office as well.
They get removed from your lab coats or if you forget and leave them on the counter they seem to walk off in the hands of other students, physicians, nurses, and patients. The engraving probably helps somewhat.

I'd love to have "Jake's freaking (sp? 🙂 ) stethoscope!" engraved on it.

I must just be hyper-vigilant or something, I've managed to hang onto the same Classic II SE since 2007.

You haven't even started school yet. Chances are you will lose it before anyone besides your mom calls you Dr. Whatever

i got the pink one, with rainbow metal. the scripture says <3love of physician<3

This is my stethoscope. Only the kiddies try to steal it.

was picking between the all black and smoke finish as well

went with the smoke finish though I loved the way the head of the all black looked

Go with smoke. That's what I did. It's a badddddd mother.

Chiming in to say don't be surprised if it gets stolen. I had my entire backpack stolen from the locked resident's workstation in clinic one afternoon. Luckily the only thing of value in it was my stethoscope. I had quit carrying my iPad, ophthalmoscope, otoscope, and other diagnostic equipment by that point of 4th year... But it sure burned to need to buy another stethoscope after making it nearly all 4 years through med school without losing it.

thanks for all of your feedback. obviously i can't go bad with the smoke or the black edition, but i think i might go with the smoke now because it's a 'baddddddd mother." although J.D. did have an all black so it's tempting

I had a black Littman, but as a med student I left it in the newborn nursery over a holiday weekend and it went poof. My replacement is a bright red one. I would have gotten a neon green or pink one, but Littmann doesn't sell them.
