SMP/post bac question

Just looking at my options for my next year and came across the idea of a post bacc / SMP. Do you think I should try for fall acceptance? i am plannign to reapply in june, no acceptances this app season.

You don't need either a postbac or SMP. Figure out what the deficits in your application are (LORs, PS, late app?) and apply broadly and early this next cycle.

How many schools did you apply to? When did you apply? Are you confident there aren't any skeletons lurking in your letter of rec closet?

I would strongly suggest not doing a post-bacc or SMP. It would be a waste of time and money for you. If I were you, I'd reapply very early and save all that effort and money that would go into a post-bacc for your secondaries.

thanks for your input, i do realize Im not "supposed" to go into post-bacc or smp. i just was feeling i need a change of scenery. Ive been working full time 1 year after graduation and feel i need to do something more this upcoming year.

Ive started a thread in the re-app forum. Concluded that my LORs, PS, interview skills were biggest factors in my unsuccessful app season.

More time living in the world as an independent responsible adult is the best way to address those shortcomings. Maturity comes from having to clean up your own mistakes.

You could also:

get a 1 year MPH (my recommendation if you miss being in class class, this is probably the best option for your future career)

Medical mission work

Travel

Learn a language (possibly combined with travel, EXOTIC CLASSROOMS!)

Get a 1 year masters degree (nutrition would be nice to know, for example)

And so much more!

There are lots of options if you're ready to not work for a while, it's just that an SMP/post-bac is a particularly expensive and pointless one.

I actually did a mission trip last summer, not sure if I have the funds/time to do another one. The trip was a factor in my late completion of secondaries. not letting that happen again.

I also have been taking span classes at CC :0 someone actually suggested taking some businesss class. might look into that

appreciate the comments guys, I will probably stay in the area. I actually found a program/award that they give post-baccs at my Univ. Hopefully it will allow me to stay at the same research position but incorporate extra courses/guidance into going into research (MD/PhD).

My undergrad GPA was similar and I made the mistake of enrolling into an SMP thinking it was a regular 1 year master's and ended up doing worse (GPA-wise), which didn't fare well for me this app cycle. I am not saying the same will happen to you, but it's MUCH more difficult to keep the 3.8+ in any SMP than in undergrad (and I am sure many others can attest to this) and not to mention it's very expensive, too.
