Your GPA is not low enough to rly benefit from an SMP but you can always benefit from more research. If I were you I’d invest all of that gap year time into research.

For what it’s worth my GPAs are pretty similar to yours, I have spent my gap years continuing research full-time, and I think it made all the difference in strengthening my app.
