From my understanding I know that SN1 and E1 both favor a tertiary substrate and both utilize a weak nucleophile/ weak base. I was wondering if anyone knew how to differentiate between which one is occurring other than checking to see if heat is added.

Heat favors E1 over SN1

Are there any other indicators I should look out for?

Thanks!

Heat - E1 Big Base - E1

Small nucleophile (can get past steric effects) - SN1

Good luck!

That's basically it! They are both favored in tertiary rxns with weak base/weak nuc. Unless heat is added, than it's E1
