EDIT: This was supposed to be a thread about the first day of SN2. However as with all intelligent life, things evolve. This thread has now become a support page for people following the SN2 plan. You can think of it as Alcoholics Anonymous for people studying to take the MCAT using the SN2 plan.

EDIT July 1, 2014:
If you are interested in @mehc012's Anki Deck, DO NOT SEND A PM. Here is the link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7if6wgaif98rkoa/mehc012 SN2edCh4s.apkg
**A NOTE: @mehc012 and several others (myself included) want to tell you guys that studying from another person's deck will probably not be as beneficial to you as creating your own cards. Yes you can take advantage of @mehc012's generosity, but you won't get the same advantage. Study the material. Create cards as you go along. You will find it more helpful to your studying. **

EDIT July 22, 2014:
The following is @TBRBiosadist's official MCAT Verbal Reasoning Strategy:
@TBRBiosadist's strategy that got [him] from a 7 average to scoring 13-15 average..

Spend the bulk of your time reading. Up to 3 minutes per passage.
  • Read the first and last paragraph thoroughly to begin with. Understand what the authors main point will be because 90% of questions require nothing more than a general idea.
  • After this, read the entire passage slowly enough where you dont feel like you need to reread sentences for understanding.
Next is just answer questions, there is a few tricks here that work about 90% of the time
  • Unless the passage is asking you about a specific detail, dont look back. READ EVERY ANSWER THOROUGLY AND THEN Answer what makes sense from the general point of the passage. Its very easy to prove a wrong answer to be somewhat correct if you dig hard enough, dont. Answer what your gut says and move onto the next question, dont contemplate to much. With that being said...
  • Answer like you were dropped on the head as a child. Alot of times if Im arguing between two answers, there is the answer that is 100% correct, and one that is 90% correct. Be an idoit and choose the one that seems like it is correct. However.....
  • "Always" is a word to avoid. If an answer uses this word, or definites like it, it is something to avoid. I would say 80% of the time the wishy washy answer is more correct then the highly affirmative one. This leads to my final point....
  • 100% of the time you are not actually looking for the "right" answer in verbal, this isnt PS or BS where 1+1 almost always equals 2 (unless we are talking about the different sedimentation values for Ribosomes). In verbal you are looking for the answer that isnt wrong. Often times an answer will seem very "right" but one aspect of it is clearly wrong, as compared to an answer that isnt wrong, but doesnt seem as right as that answer, these are meant to fool you. Choose the answer that isnt wrong.
I understand that I few of these tips may be at odds with each other. Ultimately you must adjust slightly for each passage, but it comes down to one thing. Read thoroughly. Read every sentence in the passage. Read every question. Read every answer. Then the correct answer will be fairly obvious. This may seem like it takes longer, but it takes much less time than skimming, and then trying to find the correct information later.

Or to summarize in one sentence

Understand what the hell the author is arguing

EDIT July 26, 2014:

@DoctorInASaree uploaded a guide to Verbal Reasoning. If you're interested, it's worth a look. Here is the link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2byivymmqwlvjms/MCAT VR Primer DRSAREE.pdf

EDIT 2, July 26, 2014: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/sn2d-first-day.1074344/page-52#post-15510851
________________________________________________
Just finished the first day of SN2...man is it long and exhausting.

The first day is BR physics chapter (translational motion) + 1/3 of the passages. I felt like I wasn't able to apply the stuff I read into the stuff I was tested on.

Has anyone felt this way when following the schedule? It just seems like the contents of the chapter didn't really stick in my head when I took the practice passages. Will this improve over time?

EDIT 3, March 4, 2015:

For verbal, if you are feeling lost and confused, I highly highly recommend you to look into the MCAT Strategy Course by @Jack Westin. I've been working with him, and nothing comes close to his course and teaching. It's a strategy course, so it will cover everything, not just the VR/CARS section.

I also realized that I'm wearing pink and today is Wednesday LOL. Definitely not planned.

The fact that you are familiar enough with that movie to make that connection so quickly...

Basically, I'm a not-so-closet LiLo movie fan. And everyone ever should aspire to be Tina Fey, because the world could always use more Tina Fey.

For all the peeps who have been going to the gym, have you guys been going regularly? Have you guys gained/lost any weight since you started studying?

I'm 5'9", 225 lbs (this is from an all-time high of 290 lbs during undergrad).

REALLY want to get down to 170 lbs by the end of the year but this MCAT stuff just drains me and I have found myself slacking the past few weeks. Haven't gone since the 1st of July.

What's the best way to get back into it? I usually do my lifting first with 4 sets of 4 exercises of 10-12 reps of a weight that I struggle to get the last 2-3 reps on. I then try to do cardio for 30 minutes. This and a solid diet have pretty much been the main reason why I've lost the majority of my weight in the past year and a half. BUT... I'm finding it hard to go on a regular basis now, ESPECIALLY if I don't do too hot on passages.

Also, how are you eating habits? I try my best to follow high protein, low carb, and moderate fat but man eating healthy and no gym kind of kills it for me. I need both and I tend to eat less clean on days I do not go workout. I think I have a problem lol 🙁

For those of you consistently scoring 75% or higher on TBR passages, how long did it take before you were getting those kind of scores? Just finished week 3 and I'm struggling to score above 65-70%.

I started the paleo diet (but less severe) when I started the SN2ed plan and I've been able to lose 15 pounds without exercising much. For me it's easy to take a quick break and make some healthy food when I'm stuck at home studying all day anyway instead of going out to eat or eating processed foods.

First. Stop using the cocaine to get you through studying

Also, don't be demoralized by the passages. Going to the gym will clear your head and you'll be able to "get away" from it all.
But i know how you feel. On those days, I swim. I swim like crazy and tire myself to the point where when I come home, all I want to do is sleep/read. So I resort to reading berkeley's answer explanations and then cry myself to sleep.

Get back into it by doing cardio for like a week. You'll get your heart pumping and you'll feel good. Gangsta rap is a plus. After that week, do something like 3 days weights/3 days cardio

Wow. Congrats on the weight loss 🙂 What do you usually eat?

LOL I swear I've stopped! I only use it when reviewing my answers 😉

Man I wish I had a pool at times like this. It's hella hot here too. But I'll definitely take your advice on the cardio. Gonna leave the lifting alone for a little bit and just get some treadmill action going on.

Rap is literally ALL I listen to. LOL If you were to meet me, you would legit be totally surprised and maybe even somewhat offended to the stuff I listen to.
Let me put it like this...

"ratchet".

That is the type of stuff I listen to. Pure ratchetness.

Is it crazy that my exam is 5 month away and im starting my content review ???.. I will be taking classes during the last few months but a very light load. I suspect that my constant aniki-ing of notes will keep the info fresh in my mind. So i guess i will be the last one to take the exam. I hope you guys share your upcoming 30+ grades on this thread to motivate us (no pressure lol not like there wasn't enough already)

First off great work on the weight loss!!
If you happen to have a smart phone the Nike Training app is a great way to have a "personal trainer" on the go. It takes your weight/height/age/goals etc. and creates a set of personalized work outs for you! For example you can do 20 min of cardio and then 2 15 min exercises they provide which works out various muscle groups.

As far as diet goes, I try to stick to a vegi diet(just because meat doesn't sit well with my system).
Proteins in the morning usually keep me going for a good 4-5 hours (avocado on whole wheat toast, greek yogurt+ fruit, honey granola)
Lunch I like to keep light because I will fall asleep(usually a hard boiled egg and a salad. Or soup and some bread)
Dinners you can eat salmon( I eat a lot of seafood, grilled vegies, )
Also snacks help a lot!! instead of eating 3 big meals I eat 5 small meals and incorporate a lot of nuts, fruit, yogurt.

I feel like MCAT studying is totally a mind/body combination. If you are really committed to a healthy lifestyle you can totally accomplish it!! 🙂

Wow. Congrats on the weight loss 🙂 What do you usually eat?
I eat a lot of meat and veggies. Usually I'll cook up a big dinner with steak/chicken/pork and have it for lunch the next day. The book I got is really nice because all of the meals consist of about 5 or less ingredients so everything I make is pretty easy.

Just keep going!! Towards the end of the schedule you'll realize that you can approach ANY kind of question because you have this "MCAT" mindset. I know it's been said A LOT and you probably wonder okay when is it going to happen to me. But the more passages you do, the more exposure you get to these types of questions the higher your percentages will be. Also this might be the case only for me but certain topics I will get 90-100% and others probably like 40% .. it also depends a lot on your understanding of certain topics as well.

Ditto on the mind/body combination. Plus... Ima have to steal your diet. Mine mainly consists of fresh mozarella, turkey, fish, greek yogurt and almonds. Gonna have to add a bit more variety like yours!

Days get into that argument where if he is eating eggs.. that doesn't make him a vegetarian..

TRUUUU (2 chainz voice)

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. For my break day i have now slept until 2pm and it is the most beautiful thing I have ever done, but so many questions to answer!

Test is Aug 15th, so a little over a month away. Im going to by about 20 of my favorite energy drink and start drinking them through my practice test like I was under test conditions. I used caffiene pills for awhile, but they would hit me to all at once, and Im prone to panic attacks so that didnt help

Exercise is like a drug to me and most of my diet is lots of vegetables with massive amounts of protien, some days I dont want to, so I don't, Im not on a strict regiment and im only mildly bulking.

I can go through 4 12 oz cups a day so... 4x12=48oz of coffee. Which I drink black so ulcers are probably on their way.

It took me about 1-2 weeks before my TBR scores started going up, but they have kinda plateaued at where they are now about 3 weeks ago at just about 90% average. Of course since some of my weakest areas are electrochemistry and optics/light, I had both of those this last week so they were both below my average in the low 80s. It really is just getting used to how they ask questions and whatnot. Half the time now if I see a problem where I am supposed to use an equation because the answers are far enough apart to use my theoretical knowledge to eliminate all the ones it couldnt be.

I always used to read people's comments on the 30+ thread saying that the MCAT needed a schedule and it required you to eat right and exercise. Didn't realize this till I started studying. I don't workout regularly during the year but I'm eating three solid meals a day and then going to kickboxing/boxing to take out my anger and pretend the mitt is TBR/MCAT and I always feel amazing and refreshed after.

Just focus on what your body needs to get it through the day. Notice when you study more productively. For me, it's when I eat well and workout.

I'm totally going to go for a hardcore run the day before my MCAT. Maybe not too hardcore 4-5 mile maybe.

Ladeda....I have no more passages to do... This is weird. What to do...

I'll go get my 3.5 months of hair and beard chopped off. So if I fail on saturday at least I'll look sexy while doing it.

I haven't been going as consistently as I would like to but still manage to go atleast 4-5 times a week. My weight seems to be about the same I'm 5'9 hovering around 157 lbs tryna gain 10 more lbs of lean muscle and settle there.

Howww does this thread keep turning into lifting convos? 😴
I mean, OK, the first 2x sure...I think we're destined to hit every topic eventually!

I gave up on all of my 'eat healthy' and exercise goals when I got behind on the MCAT. I like that stuff, but I'm just...busy. It takes time to do it well, and I don't feel like putting in a half-arsed effort towards perfecting my arse, you know?

I still try to get out some, but

But Brah, how are ya goin to get dose sick gains!?
I'm a girl - we only work out to lose weight 😛
Fortunately, that means I can settle for 'junk in da trunk' status when I don't feel like getting in shape
Plus, for me, 'getting in shape' entails 'get back into athletic state following forced couch potato status secondary to ACL injury". My knee is completely healed now, but I got mad out of shape because I was living in my car post-surgery and couldn't do PT like that, or really find any low-impact workout. So I got super sadly out of shape. I started to get it back, then began MCAT madness and, well...I decided that coming back properly requires more focus than I can afford during MCAT season. I shoot hoops, play some pickup Ultimate, jog around the block, you know, but nothing serious.

(I know the weight loss thing is not universally true, but where's the fun in PC?)

I have no shame in admitting my vanity and I 100% approve of your post.

Lol. Honestly though, the constant workout conversations dont suprise me. I shadowed a few ortho surgeons for awhile and they spent half of every surgery talking about their lifts.

That or the new toys they had bought themselves

The things is tho... I DO NOT want to be a fat... out-of-shape doctor who gets tired walking when he decides to use the stairs making his way through the hospital or seems to be a huge hypocrite when he tells his patients they should "starting working out" or "eating healthier" or "lose weight" when he should have done that a LOONNNNGGGG time ago himself lolz

That'd be a total d!ck move imo

A consultation with a doctor laced with vulgarities might not be appropriate either...

All I hear in my family is talks about lifting. I have competitive professional bodybuilders and physique models as my siblings and father

OK! I still have Gen chem 8, 9, 10, Physics 8, 9, 10, and Orgo 6, 7, 8 left and I'm on Day 40ish. I've been skipping Bio altogether except for doing some passages, because the other subjects were completely lost on me - took the classes 6 to 9 years ago. And I work 60+ hours/week in the lab, so something had to give. I'm more or less on schedule except for Bio. I know all the non-physiology stuff cold (doing a Bio PhD) but will need to cram some physiology in there somewhere.

Then I plan to do like big picture reviewing for a few days, then start my FLs with some TPRH science and verbal workbook in there... Really kinda worried about all the information is going to come together in the end. Right now it's all just content that's floating around in my head, and the stuff I studied back in May seems very far away and inaccessible. I'm hoping that once I start doing more problems it'll crystallize? I guess if in a month I'm not on target in my FLs, I'll postpone... but I can't wait for this to be over. I can't keep trying to both work full time and study full time, accomplishing neither satisfactorily. You kids who can just do nothing but study (and LIFT), do NOT take this for granted!!

LOLzz. my badddd. I keep forgetting this is the interwebzz.. some peeps may be more offended/sensitive around this way. My mistake 🙂
Haha, it's not about the offensiveness, it's about protecting you from the mods.
And yeah, I know the mods are trying to protect people from being offended, so it kinda is about that, but...no, I only care because of the mods.

Uh I have research and work almost full time and volunteer at two places. Might not be as busy as you but not nothing

As for vulgarities every doc ive had to date has had the dirities sense of humor (rape, incest, bestiality) and cursed like a surgeon to boot. They just controlled it atound patients. Then again im mostly around surgeons. When I go on sdn during my breaks I usually am on 4chan and reddit as well so I have to work not to let those commebt types sill over lol

Kids! I took those classes 7-9 years ago too!

I always wondering how the moderators because who they are.. like is there some sort of SDN moderator nomination ceremony...
I asked a mod last year how to become a mod and he said he put me on the list.

1 year later, and nothing. So I asked another mod just recently. No response

Is that at me?
I'm not saying I can't, I'm just saying that I am willing to pay some attention to it when I am not busy, and I am not willing to do so when I am. I don't see it as fun, I see that sort of focus as work, and therefore I cut it out when I am busy.

Personally, I have never gotten any sort of real satisfaction out of solo exercise - only team sports. And I have never done the whole 'dissect every aspect of my diet/exercise plan to shape up appropriately'. I just don't care about that aspect of working out. At all. I find it mind-numbingly boring. To me, being in shape is something you have to have in order to do cool things. That's it. I see no joy in it for it's own sake, just as I see no purpose in running if it's not to get the ball/disc before someone else, or to score.

I wasn't trying to say that you shouldn't or that you weren't putting in the effort to do so despite a full schedule. I was just stating that I don't find it worthwhile, so I stop when I'm busy. Maybe I could work out with a full schedule - but I can't commit to a team with routine practices and weekly tournaments...and that sort of team activity the only format where I really enjoy long-term athletics.

I asked a mod last year how to become a mod and he said he put me on the list.

1 year later, and nothing. So I asked another mod just recently. No response

They took open nominations recently.

Personally, I'd rather there was less modding (or at least, that they'd focus on things like "lol you guys got trolled" rather than a few curse words), so I have no desire to join their ranks.
