This is going to sound pretty bad, and well its is. Has anyone here called a school and told them that they are going to be in area at a specific day and received an invitation for an interview soon after. I've heard numerous stories and want to know if there is truth to this.

yes, it worked for Jefferson. I called late afternoon one day, told them I was going to be in town for another interview on such and such a data, and then had an interview invitation waiting for me in my inbox the next morning.

this strategy, however, didn't work for BU or Einstein.

Yup, did that for Cincinnati (because of Case Western) and got an interview invite the next day (today).

what exactly do you guys say? I am going to be in town...if you are going to invite me for an interview give it to me now..lol. Just kidding. Just wondering what you say after that point.

(In pleasant, cheerful tone): "Hi, this is josehernandez94 and I have an interview scheduled at X School of Medicine on Y date. In order to save travel expenses, I would like to know, if you're planning to to give me an interview, if I could schedule it for Y-1 or Y+1 date." Then usually some cute comment about how you don't "count" on getting an interview, you're just wondering.

An alternative: "Hi, this is josehernandez and y'all be whack if you fools don't gimme an interview. If you don't, Ima bust a cap in yo ass."

jose, were you lying or did you really have an interview. Don't take that the wrong way only curious

no, I really had an interview... actually, I had one the day before and one the day after. as it turned out, I was really fortunate to have called so I could schedule that one right between.

What was their reply after you said this? "We'll see what we can do?"

would you try this for crazy schools? like yale and harvard?

A very very very good friend of mine from Harvard was trying to do that with the UChicago/ Wash U interviews. He tried to tell UChicago that he was going to be in the area and the costs for him were running up.

3 days later he was rejected pre-interview from UChicago.

Ouch!!!

Do you think that this will work for SUNY Downstate (in brooklyn)? I live about 25minutes away by bus and maybe 10 by car. Now if I call and let them know that on thursday I will be passing by on my way to the local mall, do you think they will try to accomodate me?

I'm sure if you're being honest about everything, there is nothing wrong with asking a particular medical school if it would be possible to have an interview close to a time when you'll be in town (and that you are certain to be in town at that time).

I think it is reasonable to ask if you're traveling to a city more than about 50 miles away.

With the UChicago fellow, maybe they would have rejected him anyway. Why would asking for an interview if you'll BE in chicago for another reason be bad?

Saying "I'll be in town, and the interview will help me for money reasons" sounds dumb...

Also, applying late and asking for an interview right away is considered poor form (because you're taking advantage of the system, and getting your file considered ahead of people who completed their application before you did). Some schools might reject you for this...

anyone know if yale or harvard has interviews on fridays/saturdays?

i'll be flying into philly from austin... so i guess i have enough credence to ask them for the interview? scary.
