Hi All

So, quick question, and this might show how I've never dabbled with drugs, but I've been watching the Stanley cup finals and before every game they keep angling on a player who holds something under his nose and sniffs. Im guessing its amyl nitrite or smelling salts. What is he sniffing, why is he sniffing it, why is it not restricted if it enhances performance , and before a game!?

yeah, I'm 38 (today!!) and I just have no idea how this stuff could possibly help a pro hockey player (supposedly in amazing shape) before a game even starts.

Maybe it just helps mask the scent wafting up from his lucky jock strap?

Happy birthday!

Smiling. 🙂 But still curious.
And thanks!

I would think it could be anything that would open up the sinuses and make it easier to breath. I woul personally prefer vick's vapor rub over ammonia, if that's what they're using, but to each his own

Thanks for the answers MED STUDS.

I am sure of one thing, it's not what EDDIE MURPHY was sniffing, as caught on tape, just before he went on stage in the DELIRIOUS STANDUP show that aired on HBO 800 times circa 1983.

And if that wasn't the most RANDOM reference on SDN, I don't know what is!

It's also coincidence that I was at my Aunt's house this afternoon and she always likes to show me her old antiques, she collects lots of stuff. What did she pull out but this tin, which still contained the "capsules" from 196X...

I can think of a lot of ways to increase performance. Albuterol and pseudophed would obviously open up the airways which is certainly enhancing to their game.

They could always say they have asthma or a cold and it seems that it would be hard to ban such things.

I guess that might be true, but I just wonder how long that could last? 20 mins? 45? 5?

I'll ask one of the coaches at my son's hockey camp in case there's an exact thing all the guys use that's well known...

It is ammonia "smelling salts" capsules. Some teams will go through a boatload of them during a big game. It is a noxious stimulus that doesn't have any real physiologic effects per se, but some guys feel that it gives them a boost of alertness and aggressiveness. I can't stand them myself.

Thanks Periop!!! Just what the sport needs, more aggressive hockey players to concuss more forwards as they cross the blue line with their heads down...

2nd: go canucks!
