I recently graduated from my undergrad... my gpa isnt as competitive as id like it to be so i thought it be a good idea to take over my lowest pre-reqs to raise my science gpa

i did two years at a CC and then transferred i took all my pre-reqs at the CC but some were below a B... my problem is can i retake the pre-reqs at a CC again would that be horrible?

im just trying to raise my gpa so i can apply next cycle

please help...i dont want another gap year!!! 🙁

It is hard to judge if you need to or what the course of action should be without knowing more detail about your sGPA, cGPA, are you bio major?, have you taken DAT? etc??

Just for your info: some school does not take pre-req from CC and one school that pops into my head right away is Tufts. Many has told me they "prefer" from 4 year University but again it is very debatable. but it will show when you take DAT if you haven't already done so.

I would say if the pre-reqs are not below C (which is the cut off for many schools) then don't retake it. Get A's in all of the upper level science courses (I don't know if you have already taken these or not since I don't know your background).

I think we need more info to give you better idea on what course of action we can advise.

im taking the DATs i just took them without studying to see what it would be like...im torn between taking pre-reqs should i or should i not

Like Canard said, we need more info to give you any guidance.

What is your GPA? Overall GPA? How many science credits have you taken? How many upper level bios have you taken?

Sorry to repeat you Canard, but you already asked all the right questions.

I don't really have anything to add that hasn't already been said, but if you haven't done well in school...and you did bad in CC pre-req courses...then maybe you should reevaluate your career path. Are you going to make it in dental school even if you get in? Or will you be one of those that fail out/repeat for years?

It's the question nobody wants to hear, but it's in your best interest. Do you enjoy science classes? If not then why are you considering dentistry? If the answer is money. You are in the wrong place friend.

However, I'm jumping the gun. If you've taken the DAT and you did well, and you DO enjoy science classes(and preform in them..) then just do well in upper division classes. You hit the red flag by taking CC pre-req classes. You can't do that.

Do well on your DAT - really well. That may be able to compensate for the GPA.

You should always do what you enjoy(and hopefully are good at)

You might want to consider a post-bacc program. Have you applied for a cycle? Just go for it and see what happens.

my overall is a 3.0 and science is a 2.5 which is horrible ...
i have taken 2 upper level biology courses because i was a non-science major

i am home for a year because i just graduated and want to totally change the look of my gpa it is much needed...
i have over 400 hours of shadowing
have many leadership experience in different clubs and associations
i was VP of pre-dent club
i have LORs from well known professors and dentist ive volunteered with
ive had my PS read by many people and they said it was amazing
i now work as a full time dental assistant

Well then there's no question about it. Ace that DAT! Non-science major? I'd take some upper dev bio classes.

Looks like you should have spent more time working on your grades than your EC activities. The only rational reason for retaking pre reqs is because you are ill prepared in the basic sciences and certainly not for improving your gpa. As for not wanting another gap year, it may not be a choice you can make.

Do postbac for a year and then apply.

If I were you, I'd have started this very summer with 2 sciences and do some more shadowing as you're starting your postbac. In the fall, kick it up and do 3 or 4 science classes full time to improve your GPA. Do 3 or 4 science classes again for the Spring semester. Do another first summer session with 2 science classes and that should raise your GPA to 3.0 and higher, given that you've aced all of your postbac classes. You'll also have a separate column for post-bac GPA, so that should stand out. Your year and half of upward trend can offset that 2.5 science GPA. Then take the DAT and have nothing less than a 19 and you should be in a much better standing as an applicant for next year. Best of luck
