So.... did I miss something regarding appropriate interview attire?

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to interview for a medical school over the internet. It showed everyone else interviewing on screen and a live representation of them. I noticed of the 4 guys interviewing that day, I was the only one wearing a suit and tie. One was wearing a suit but no tie and an unbuttoned top button of the dress shirt, one was wearing a shirt and tie with a quarter-zip jacket over it but not a suit jacket, and the last guy was actually just wearing a plain white shirt that looked like an undershirt (I wish I was joking).

Am I missing something?? I thought suit+tie is expected for medical school interviews??? Did I overdress in the suit+tie (the suit was navy blue, white dresshirt, and red tie if that matters)??? Is it acceptable to be more lax?

I apologize in advance if Im coming off as too harsh or judgemental, I just have always thought suit+tie is expected of us guys for these interviews.

It is. People are clearly taking liberties due to the fact that they are in their homes. I guess whether adcoms will make allowances will probably come down to just how casual you appear on screen, how much the interviewer is bothered by it and whether it makes it into the report, and, of course, how strong the application is otherwise.

Like you, I'd never risk it, but to each his or her own! I am quite sure at least a few guys not in suits and ties will be admitted this cycle! 😎

Considering that they are your competition, Mr. Undershirt just made it that much easier for you to get in. You will never be faulted for wearing a suit and tie, except maybe from that Windsor nut from a few months back.

This guy?

Was this a panel or Q&A separate from the interview? Everyone in all my interviews have been very formal. I wonder if they dressed down because this event was not combined with the interview?

No this was a full-on interview for admission to medical school.

I wouldn’t fault anyone who was dressed in reasonably professional attire, especially if they are interviewing from their workplace, but I think anyone would draw the line at the undershirt....

So does that mean suit+tie for all interviewees?
I have had 7 virtual interview this cycle, and every single male applicant has worn a suit and tie. I have not had an interview like what you depicted, but I would think that is out of the ordinary. Yes, suit and tie just like you would for an in-person interview.
