people who are a grade young than me are getting their med school acceptances today, just like last year.

i'll have to endure through this cycle and the next cycle before i get a shot in 2014. honestly, the wait is killing me. these gap yrs are gonna be the absolute worst times in my entire life.

lastly...who are those folks getting acceptances this early? many of my friends got in off the waitlist in july of this year (applied last cycle). are they the super candidates with 3.9+ and 38+ ???

i feel like i am not going to get in when i apply...but i have to try.

I got in today. Check out my mdapps for the stats

I'm 29 and just got accepted to my top school, I'm actually more of an underdog than a super candidate. Stay positive and make the best out of your gap years.

it is virtually impossible for me to stay positive...

Hang in there...the outcome will be one thing or the other. You've worked hard and come this far.:xf:

We're with you! <hug>

Hah, this process can really weigh you down. It's not the time to lose hope though.

Stay positive! I can't even start pre-med until late 2013 or 2014, so I don't think you can even call what I'm doing gap years, but I've got plenty to keep myself busy and motivated. Try to find something (optimally that you love and/or feel compelled to do) to keep you busy in the meantime, while keeping your eye on the prize. You'll get there eventually if you keep your head up and keep trucking along.

It's not worth comparing yourself to others who are already ahead of you; we all have different situations and timelines. Instead, learn from them now, and apply what you can when you apply yourself. :luck:

It's not a race to see who can become doctor first. Just try to enjoy what you do now and know that you are acquiring experience and knowledge that all the fresh college hot-shots won't have.

+1

Since you asked, I do think it's important to say that impressive candidates don't always have top stats to make them impressive. I've got 2 acceptances and a waitlist spot and I'm a traditional college senior with a 3.55 cGPA and 3.45 sGPA and a 29 mcat score - but you better believe I belonged with everybody else getting early interviews and I belonged with everybody else getting acceptances.

I think numbers get people down more than abything, and I just want you to know you can rise above and be more than that, and not only get in but get in early and with options.

just have to chime in that i got an acceptance with a 29 on Oct 15th. OP I drove myself nuts throughout undergrad always thinking about med school and obsessing over whether or not I would get in, and let me tell you that if you want something badly enough it will happen! find good activities to make your app strong right now and work hard in school.

OP, I got in with a 29Q MCAT and a 3.65 GPA. (lots of extra currics though (research, volunteer, work experience))

I been psyching myself out since July, and I got in. Best advice that I ever got from this forum was to apply early and to apply broadly. I know several people with better stats than me that have only 0-1 interviews at this time, most likely due to a late application.

I just got in after TWO failed cycles and a 2 years off...it's possible! 🙂 like others have said, apply early and broadly--once you've taken the time to figure out that this medicine thing is for you, it'll shine through your app and someone will notice!

You should compete with yourself, and that should generate enough motivation for you to keep going. If you do it to outdo others, you won't even feel fulfilled once you do get in.

Mindset is key. Best of luck!

PS I got in 10/15, and my stats aren't super by any stretch of the imagination

1. I can understand why you might think that, but honestly my gap years have been some of the best of my life. Granted, I had to work at a very low-paying job for the majority of my time off because I could not get a good clinical/lab position and really needed the money, but I tried to think of this time as my time: free of responsibility (of course my situation is probably different than yours, I don't know if you're a nontraditional student with a family or other responsibilities).

This could be your last real opportunity to do something you have always really wanted to do before you are absorbed by the demands of a medical education. I just about cleaned out my bank account to travel for a couple weeks and had some absolutely awesome experiences (once again I was fortunate I could do this due to my general lack of obligations). I re-connected with old friends, played in co-ed sports leagues, brewed beer at home, and tried to push myself beyond my comfort zone as often as possible. Try to think of this as your time and make the most of it.

2. Certainly some of the applicants accepted early have those stats, but many applicants with more average resumes have received good news as well. My GPA and MCAT are smack in the middle for most mid-tier schools, and I was fortunate enough to garner an early acceptance. Don't think that numbers are the only piece of the puzzle, and keep your head up!

thanks everyone for all the info and encouragement.

for those of you without super stats and got in this early, do you mind sharing some of your work/activities items? did you guys have something unique and extraordinary beyond the regular cookie-cutter activities, or did you just have a broad range of "everything" and demonstrated solid commitment to each?

also, i know someone (a senior from Johns Hopkins) who applied this cycle (early and broadly across a range of schools, too) with a 3.3 and 38 MCAT, and as of yesterday, he still haven't received a single interview offer yet. I understand that 3.3 is a bit low, but he's from hopkins and got a 38 on the MCAT. plus, like what many of you have said, stats are far from everything and that a 3.3 is not prohibitively low, especially considering his undergrad and MCAT performance.

thanks again!

...and when that acceptance does finally arrive in the station, it will be a first class ticket to happiness.

Don't derail application process by comparing yourself to others. Just like all trains are unique, so are applicants.

I agree, take time to sit back and enjoy the scenery as it rushes by...this is your life; put some more coal in the fire before you run out of steam!

We're really running this metaphor into the tracks.

But it is fun so we might as well keep going until we run out of steam...

I see this thread is chugging along...

Anyway, i got in with pretty solid stats (see MDApps), but not incredible stats. I am also a re-applicant. Just relax, have a backup plan, and enjoy the ride

Congrats, but I've come to hate that word so much on these forums 😎

numbers are not everything.

there are a bunch of applicants on this site who are not "super-applicants" in terms of GPA/MCAT but they shine in other areas.

you'll be fine.

Wow, I'm in love with everything here. This is really a first class thread.

Train references were golden

OP- Keep your mind on others things besides the application process! You'll lose your mind if it's all you think about.

I'm happy that I got that rolling down the track.
