Hello All Aspiring OU-HCOM D.O.'s!
We have received many calls to our office regarding how many essays are needed in order to complete our secondary application so we've added some information on our secondary application website that we hope will help clarify things. I decided to post the information here too in case anyone had additional questions. Basically, everyone is asked to write one personal statement and then an essay or essays for the Dublin and/or Cleveland campuses if they are selected as a first, second or third preference. Here is what we've posted on the secondary application website as of July 16, 2014:
A special note about the personal statement and essay requirements:
OU-HCOM operates as one college in three locations with the overall mission being to serve the underserved in Ohio. Each campus location offers something a little different in terms of physical surroundings but the fundamental educational experience will be the same for all OU-HCOM students. Because the Dublin and Cleveland campuses have been created to primarily serve the geographic areas of Central Ohio and Northeast Ohio respectively, we are interested in attracting students to these campuses who are from or have ties to the areas and who desire to train and eventually stay and practice in those geographic areas.
All applicants are required to write a personal statement about why you wish to become a D.O., why you believe OU-HCOM is a good fit for you, and any other information you would like for the selection committee to know. This personal statement is required no matter which campus you rank as a first preference. For those ranking Athens as their first and only preference, this is the only statement required.
So that we have a better understanding of why you desire a particular campus location other than Athens, we require that you write an essay or essays detailing why Dublin and/or Cleveland appeals to you.
Please note that ranking all three campuses does not increase your chances of gaining an interview or acceptance. A candidate must be admissible to OU-HCOM before your campus preference is awarded. For example, even if you rank Cleveland as your first and only preference, you will still be considered for a spot on the Athens campus if the selection committee feels there is not a good match for that campus or if spots at that campus are no longer available.
As always, you can email me directly at [email protected] with questions, or post them on SDN and I will try to respond as quickly as I can.
