for you to get to med school. thats not including the non accpetance part.
Just the undergraduate part, how many years to get your first year degree and your bachelors altogether? I am curious I know everyone is diffrent
Also while in med school do you have to maintain a good gpa like how you did before med school?

Seven Years...for me to get an AA and BS

4 years for me. I had a couple friends do it in 3. I also had a couple friends do it in 5.

Although I will not actually start med school until August, my understanding is that, like in undergrad, the better your GPA, the more competitive your application will be. So it kind of depends on what you want to do- what you want to specialize in. If you want to do family practice, for example, GPA will not be as important, while it would be more important with dermatology. I have many friends who are going through med school with the mindset P=MD (P: pass), so for some people, GPA is definately not as important 🙂

edit: importance of GPA also depends on the prestige of the program. If you want to get into a residency at harvard, for example, you will probably have to a good GPA no matter what speciality you do...

hmmm. this one is harder for me to answer as i did not intend on going into medicine as an undergrad, not sure if i should count that.

93-97 undergrad bachelors in fine art
97-01 other stuff
01-03 starting working in ems, began to consider medicine, took chem I*
03-04 did a post bac did all other reqs, an ec, and mcat
04-05 applied and startin school

counting everything - 12 years 😱
starting when medicine was a goal - 4 years *shocking* wow.

* i intended this to be just one year, but missed deadlines for post-bac application process, i wanted to start in the summer

College was 3.5 yrs. Went to med school the year after.

As for your GPA question, we didn't have GPAs in med school. But we had H/HP/P/F grades after 1st year. And no, you don't have to get all Honors/A's in med school...unless you're going for something really competitive for residency.

4 yrs undergrad, straight to med school

My path...

'95-'00 - Five years of undergrad (second best decision I ever made)
'00-'02 - Worked for two years at a biochem core facility

'02-Present - Med school (jury's out on this one, but I've hated it so far)

A part of me is glad I took time off...gave me some time to live a real life (great job and a great girlfriend...). A part of me regrets starting school back up (no love, no life, no killer instince). And by lack of killer instinct, I mean that I lost my study skills during my two years off...

MCW Class of 2006
(355 days 'til graduation)

4 years of undergrad, 2 years off. During my 2 years off I did clinical research full-time, took some post-bacc classes, and did tons of volunteer work. So glad I took time off.

6 years undergrad, 1 year of Americorps.

I didn't start pursuing medicine until the beginning of my 5th year of undergrad though.

3 years undergraduate, straight through to medical school next year. Kinda an unorthodox track, especially for not being in a combined bs/md program, but it was a bit of a personal goal. Now i'm not sure if it was the best idea or not....next year will tell...

Began college in '00, starting med school in '05.

4 years of undergrad ('01-'05), summer of medical research ('05), starting med school in the Fall ('05).

U of Tennessee Health Science Center COM Class of '09! 😉
