Okay, let me give you the short version. Basically, be cause of an error from my university, I didn't take Bio and Chem 1 my first semester, and I can't take it next semester because it isn't offered. So, I talked to my advisor and she said I'm not behind and should just go on with SDEMP and take no summer classes. I want to do the Meharry BA-MD bridgebut I think you need science courses to take em'. But my advisor also said I can apply sophmore year...
Anyway, what do you guys think I should do, anyone in this situation or decided late to do medicine as a career....

you may have better luck asking in the pre-allo forum or URM

Okay, ignore the MD stuff I mentioned, I'm more interested into whether or not I should take Bio and Chem during the summer or just go on with what my advisor said.

I agree that you should talk to your academic counselor. You should ask him or her that crucial question of: "should I take the bio and chem classes over the summer?" And ask him/her what are the benefits and drawbacks of taking them over the summer versus waiting later? Actually, you should have him/her work with you to plan out your next two years since you seem to be doing something pretty specific.

But, I definitely think you need to take those pre-reqs at some point.

Nice disguised cross post.

It doesnt matter at all really...up to you. Take them in order is my only word of advice/experience

Before I give advice, I would like to know why/how this is the school's fault and not your own.

haha, that was my first thought as well...its tough to maintain an external locus of control, so tough.

Stop relying on advisors. Do your own research and stay on top of the game. I know you didn't intend it this way, but your post sounded like an excuse.

I did not take chemistry my first year at all. I ran track and that took up a lot of my time. As a sophmore, I am now taking chemistry and finishing the second half of my into bio reqs. Here's my advice. Don't be in a rush to add things to your pre-med profile. You are just a freshman and I'm sure med schools will not fret if you don't do a research program your freshman summer. I advise staying active in the health community. Volunteer and rack up those hours. I'm getting my EMT-B right now so all second semester I'll rack up some good experience and volunteer hours working on the ambulance. I also am applying to SDEMP programs this summer as a sophmore so it is possible. I come from a big school, and I know things can happen during registration. Just relax get your core classes out of the way and take the little time you have to explore classes you won't be able to take when you buckle down into the pre med track. Also, in terms of summer classes it may be smart to take them over the summer. But its all on you and what you think you want to do. It would sure make your sophomore year a little less hectic.

Hope this helped! and good luck!

I agree. You're a freshman, don't be in such a hurry to be a doctor. Do well in your classes, but use your free time to discover yourself as a person. It'll help you write a great story when the day comes for you to apply.

I think you should take Bio I & II and Che I & II next year. Is physics offered only Fall/Spring order? If so, take Orgo I & II and Physics I & II your Junior year. If you can take physics I in the spring I might start that next spring instead of waiting until Junior year.

If you want to knock some of this out early, take a summer class. I think Bio I & II would be the best to take during summer because then you could move on to more advanced Bio before the MCAT.

Always ask your advisor for advice but never assume everything they say is correct or best for you. Like people said, do your research and figure what you need to take and when to take it. I have found the best use of my advisor is only to verify that the class schedule laid out is actually possible and I do not mean difficulty. I mean that some courses are only offered once a year or once every two years so you need to know that ahead of time. I would not want to see you back here in a year saying, "my advisor messed up and now I can not take physics until my senior year".

Ultimately, your situation sounds perfectly normal and nothing to stress about. Worst case scenario, you take your time and finish your last pre-req your senior year, take the MCAT that summer and have a gap year where you work in the medical field and start paying off any undergrad loans.

I am a non-trad and I was in a hurry when I was 19. I thought I just have to get out of school as quickly as possible so I can work for a living instead of this boring classroom stuff. Looking back, it would have been way easier to just take my time and finish my four year degree back then, even though it was extremely boring to me. One more year sounds like an eternity when you are 18-19 but now I look back and think, dang, where did those last ten years go?

I think there's no issue taking Bio 1 & 2 over the summer. Bio 2 especially is an easy course to take over the summer.
