So... if you did not become a doctor...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Almost went into investment banking, even went on interviews at Bear Stearns and Lehman. Made the right call there.

Earlier in life, I'd teach high school sciences of some sort and coach football and wrestling.

Now? I'd move to Idaho or Montana and run an archery/hunting supply or work for a hunting outfitter.

I may still love out there.

Anybody out west hiring young enthusiastic intensivists/cardiac docs starting in 2020?

You should shoot Periopdoc a PM.

As for me? I want to die and come back as this guy:

I periodically see postings for what I believe is POD's group in Missoula, MT. Thus far, I have been unable to get my wife to agree to move out west.

I would have stayed a ski patroller.
👍

Hope the waves are good cuz the pow is epic this year.
A couple of teasers from the last couple of weeks:

He's not in Missoula. Shoot him a PM.

My old PD quit between my CA2 and CA3 years and moved to Missoula to work at the VA there. He was a pancreatic cancer survivor and decided life was too short to stay in the rat race so he peaced out. We all missed that big Latvian teddy bear.

Has the weather been decent enough to enjoy all the snow. Every time I check the weather for that big resort a few hours south of you the wind is howling and it's still dumping which means 75% of the mountain is closed down. Ah how I miss the old owners of that place - sustained winds of 40mph with gusts to 60+, have fun at the top - we hope you don't die getting blown off a cliff. YEEEWWWWW.

Dude, have you seen the coverage of Pipe lately?? They're getting their 3rd major swell in the last 30 days. Where do think the storms that are bringing you all the snow are coming from. Unfortunately by the time the swells make their way to me they are accompanied by howling onshores and buckets of rain.

Ah, I thought he was. So, that's a different group, then. Still sounded awesome...

Ohhh yeah. Was up yesterday post call: 18" ontop of 400+ inches for the season (and it's only Jan 20th). :heckyeah:

As you know, a lot of the west coast is coming out of the 5 year drought.

Funny how many here would have been a teacher as that is what my brother is.
Took 6 months off and traveled India and Thailand- not a bad gig once you are tenure status.

Naaaice. Was surfing the North Shore a couple of months ago and even then, it was killer good- literally as I was seriously tossed around.

Psych and Salty,

I'd love to. I doubt that I could convince my wife and there are some other family health concerns that will likely tie me to "home." If that changes, I'd be real tempted to find myself somewhere that elk and muleys roam.

Instead of changing careers, I'd still like to be a doc but in Australia or New Zealand where work and life and people are more laidback. 😉

The multiverse theory says that this version of you already exists in a parallel universe.

I always thought being one of those National Geographic photographers would be an awesome life.

Is the process arduous in order to practice 'down unda' if one is a US trained attending? Not gonna lie, I've always fancied aussie land...
I've heard it's getting tougher now, but check out these two threads, I think they should have all the answers you're looking for (see answers especially from Leforte and C.P., Leforte is a surgeon while C.P. is an anesthesiologist):

Too many other things I'd like to do. I get bored easily. I'm not sure I could sail the world but I'd be up for trying.
But realistically, I'd probably be racing something. Most likely dirt bikes or trophy trucks.
I'd also like to have a side job hitting big mountains from heli's. But that is so Dependent on weather. I can't sit still waiting for the conditions to peak. At least in the dirt is almost always good.

I was doing basic science research prior to med school. I likely would have stayed in it and gotten a PhD. If I had truly followed my dream I would have taken the offer to be a surf guide in Costa Rica. It's funny how meeting the one changes priorities.

Is the North Shore as locally dominated as is written about? I have heard mixed things, some say not to even paddle out because some local enforcer will slap you and others say it's mainly all talk/rumor. I have consistently heard that the west side and Kauai are kinda heavy with locals.

Crna

dabbled in college and did very well with some investments. Getting back into it and trying to do options/futures now.

Doubt i could have flown fighter planes as my eyes are crap, but flying a helicopter looks like a ton of fun.

Respect gets respect. If you paddle out and play by the rules, don't drop in on anyone, and let the obvious regulars get their waves, you'll be just fine. If you go out somewhere and aggressively try and chase waves and compete all aggro with the guys who surf that spot every day, you'll be in a little hot water.
