I just submitted my primary today. I know I know, VERY LATE... But I was way below competitive with my prev. stats (3.7 + unbalanced 26) for MD. I used my own spreadsheet stickied at the top to select a whole bunch of lower end to mid-tier schools (some of which are in my mdapps). So my question is, what do you guys think about JUST the following 4 schools with my stats AND the "late" factor:

Univ. of Illinois
Rosalind Franklin
Rush
Loyola

stats: 3.7cGPA, 3.68sGPA, 30M (11PS, 9VR, 10BS), Math/CS major, IL resident

Keep in Mind: I know what my spreadsheet says. I know that I'm within 1 standard deviation of each of these schools' averages, and am at or above average for each. But what all my numbers don't tell me is how screwed am I since I am late. Do I have enough of a chance because I applied to 25+ schools? Lay it on me. Please and Thank You.

In my opinion having spoken with those 4 schools & what they're looking for score-wise, provided you have decent clinical volunteer experience, you'll get interviews from all four, with Loyola being the least "guaranteed". Timing may be an issue as they screen for secondaries. UIC does also, but they're pretty fast. I'd suggest you consider U Chicago (spoke with them & got a positive impression of their treatment of students) and possibly Feinberg (similar conversation, negative impression) also.

I'd take a look for the 2ndary questions ASAP; they're posted somewhere on SDN I'm sure, I think you can see Rush's online even without the primary going through yet.

A thing to be aware of is that UIC fills up the Chicago campus first, if you're interviewing late in the cycle, you may well be interviewing for Rockford or Champaign spots.

Also, unless you'd prefer to wait a year if these 4 don't work out, why not also apply to SIU, maybe Med College of Wisconsin (which is private)? Best odds for you to be accepted (% accepted versus applicants) are Rush & SIU, although R. Franklin accepts more students with lower stats.

Once you have the interview, it's up to you to turn it into an acceptance; the interview just means that on paper you can make it. After that, they want to see if you're "one of them" and can catch a curve ball question, etc. You may want to do mock interviews unless you're pretty comfortable with both interviewing and the subjects covered..I'm reading wikipedia now on eugenics, euthanasia, etc to get up to speed on medical ethics issues myself..

Thanks for the info. I'm definitely planning on doing secondaries before I get complete. I'm also applying to SIU actually, but I heard that they're not too friendly with city raised people, even if you're from IL... so I don't have highest hopes from them.

And when you say UChicago or NWU... I'm not really sure what you're saying. My stats aren't really even in the ball park. Do you mean just give it a shot for the hell of it?

Anyone else have any thoughts?

As for SIU, they aren't friendly to suburban or chicago residents north of a certain interstate. I was politely put into the group that is wait listed for a secondary, even though I got my primary in decently early.

We're in a similar situation numbers wise. I'm assuming your also in the chicago/IL area. Similar stats, similar MCAT although I only took it once.

I went out on a limb and applied to northwestern. I do research for an MD/PhD who also is an associate professor there, so I figured it might give me some a little edge if it ever came down to it. At this point it seems doubtful that I'll get an interview though.

Anyway, good luck, hopefully we'll catch eachother at one of those schools. 👍

i'm in a very similar situation as you my friend. i just submitted today, with 3.6 and 31O. i'm not entirely certain how much lateness really affects their decision-making. i don't think it's really that bad for some schools, and for others it sucks. but i would be lying if i said i wasn't worried either. you're looking good though. hopefully we can get in somewhere decent.

You're late for the primary, but you're not that late. Don't worry too much. Everyone who posts here are gunners who probably sent their primary the first day AMCAS opened. Plenty of people get in submitting this time of year.

Sorry, I'm from Chicago. UChicago would have more properly been termed "The Pritzker School" (because the family donated enough money to have a school named after them, as well as a park, and lots of other things) and "The Feinberg School" which I probalby misspelled; as a sibling went there, I still just call it NWU or Northwestern University.

Depending on ECs, you've got a shot at The Pritzker School. They're not primarily numbers based per my discussion with an adcomm this spring; although a 7 is the lowest section score to warrant an interview.

Have you checked Medical College of Wisconsin? It's near Chicago, and definitely a good target given your stats. best of luck!
