So is HOWARD gonna update their website ??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
From Dr. Skinner---via email.

The ADEA's website should have the correct information. We are in the process of migrating to a Health Science website, which will include medicine, pharmacy, nursing and allied health. If the candidates are that upset and Howard is the only school to which they applied, then I guess they are entitled to a refund. Candidates may request information from Mrs. Willis at [email protected] or Mrs. Randall at [email protected]

If you haven't noticed, they finally updated the admissions page. Besides the changes in pre-reqs, they bumped the minimum GPA and DAT scores too. They want 18s across the board now. I don't know what they're trying to do over there.

I went to the admissions page and it was still out of date. Can you post a link to the new website?

just how many admissions pages do they have?

1) google "hucd" and click first link
2) click "admissions"
3) ????
4) profit!

I did that. I just saw no updates! It still says Admission Policies for 2010-2011.
The minimum Criteria for Admission are:
Bachelor of Science or Arts degree
GPA: 2.7
Total Science GPA: 2.7
DAT: 17 (in each of the eight categories)
The following subjects are the minimum required core courses that must be obtained from an accredited four (4) year college/university in the United States or Canada:

English Composition and Literature 6 semester hours
Inorganic Chemistry and Labs 8 semester hours
Organic Chemistry and Labs 8 semester hours
Human Anatomy/Physiology 6 semester hours
Physics 6 semester hours
Electives 22 semester hours

Recommended coursework:

Biology lecture/lab 8 semester hours
Physiology 6 semester hours
Microbiology 6 semester hours
Biochemistry 6 semester hours

So I'm curious as to how the other poster saw some updated info. I figured he or she must be looking at a different site.

Dump your cache or something. I had to use the google cache to pull up the old one to compare them. It was freshly updated.

That worked, thanks. I didn't realize my internet would refuse to load the updated version of a site that I had visited before.

The strange think to me about the new requirements (well besides 8 credits of biochem) is that they split 6 credits of anatomy and physiology into 6 credits of pure anatomy and 6 credits recommended of physiology. I know at one school I looked at, they required 3 credits of anatomy 3 credits of physiology and so if you took anatomy and physiology as one course you needed two semesters. At Howard, you would need four which I don't think most school's offer. My school only offers 2 semesters of A&P and they have only one three credit class for anatomy that is offered once every three years. Needless to say I wasted $80 e-submitting my howard app 😡

They seem to not understand how a lot of undergrad institutions do things. For a lot of people the pre-reqs are not possible without going to another school. If I were applying, I couldn't get 8 and 6 credits in either of those.

Anyway, it's just absurd that they gave no notice about the changes before the cycle and now they just give everyone the "tough luck" response. It took 6 weeks into the cycle to update the website! When Michigan went to 100 shadowing hours required, they warned people ahead of time. Utah is warning people for next cycle that biochm and physiology will be required. It's just unprofessional of them to spring it on everyone. Did they get new staff who are just trying to shake things up or something?

If they really enforce this 18s across the board requirement, they now have the most strict DAT requirement in the country. No one has that kind of explicit cutoff.

The most perplexing thing is why I even care about any of it!

I spoke to Mrs. Nixion. They are changing their website to 6 credit hours vs 8 credit hours for Biochemistry because there is no such thing and is rare for 8 credit hours (unless there is a lab, which most schools don't at least where I'm located.)

How doesn't that help you? You will be over the amount in your case if you take both at the credit amount mentioned. If you only have biochem 1 at your school, you will have to find another institution to take it or find a school online that offers biochem 2 online. Here is the email from Nixion:

What I emailed:

Upon reviewing the new updates on the dental school website, I see 8 semester hours of Biochemistry. I called Universities around my area and they state there is no such thing as 8 semester hours of Biochemistry. Most schools grant 3 credits and don't have labs and don't have two semesters. What should a candidate do if each Biochemistry is only worth 3 credits each course which is a total of 6 semester hours?

Response back:

Because the curriculum is Biochemistry intensive we are requiring at least 2 courses in Biochemistry. If you have 6 hours your application will be considered for an interview. We will be updating our website to reflect 6 hours instead of 8 hours.

I had actually called the school about this in early June when I didn't know they were in the process of changing their requirements. I had assumed from the beginning it was 8 semester hours and the lady on the phone had told me that "if you get in, that exception will be made this time for you to have 4 semester units, but if you have to reapply, you'll have to have the 8 semester hours then."

Not sure what to make of it now though...

Check your PM. You should be ok as long as your transcripts say biochem I and biochem II. Upon reviewing your app they will investigate the curriculum at the instuition you took it at anyways.

What I posted is from yesterday. That email was sent to Cecille the assistant Dean and she foward it to Nixon. I don't think the semester hrs will hurt a candidate because all schools are different to what credits they will give. Therefore, I believe the committee looks at your transcripts to see if it states biochem I and biochem II and from there they investigate that particular schools curriculum to give your app the go.
