So I've spent the past 2 months on Reddit's Premed page. Here's some interesting things I've encountered

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

1) They don't like @KnightDoc
-Like, at all.

2) Hive mentality
-You best not say something unpopular (no matter how true it is). Not only will they downvote you because they don't like your reason-based opinion, but they will also stalk your entire post history on Reddit. Its very bizarre.

3) A little too many high-schoolers posting
-In the month I was a participant, I saw several high school students posting about asking for advice for the MCAT and a handful had not even taken the ACT / SAT yet. Fortunately, several people turned them away with the advice to just enjoy life now and not worry about Premed until one is actually in college.

4) If you mention that certain races have an easier/harder time getting into medical school, you will be killed.
-That is not to say not everyone who got in didn't 100% deserve it. Obviously if one got into medical school they deserve to be there with full marks. But if you point to studies showing certain races can score lower on MCAT/GPA and still matriculate compared to other races (especially those of Asian descent, which is unfortunate) then you will be lit on fire. They don't care that you weren't ill-meaning. I've seen several people simply point out that for some, it can be easier to get in than for other races only to have 10+ people respond trying to attack them. See point # 2.

5) Don't say something positive about SDN, this is another reason they will happily gang-up on you.
-And then stalk your post history. Again, see point # 2.

Yeah, basically all this applies to SDN too. I personally like r/premed for the polls, being able to sort comments by upvotes (which usually will organize them by most to least helpful), and how condensed everything is on one post (requires less scrolling for me). I like SDN for the school-specific threads.

1. lot more burnout/depression/anxiety posts, this includes /r/medicalschool and /r/residency
2. lot more "MD only" posters
3. i get the impression that /r/premed has a higher proportion of female users than SDN, but maybe that's just me

No offense, but, honestly, who cares? To me, the two sites serve different functions.

Reddit is much more free wheeling, less moderated, and much less attractive to me. They find SDN toxic and suffocating, but I like the fact that everything here is more structured, abuse of participants is not tolerated, and there is infinitely more valuable, actionable information here, courtesy of the participation by adcoms, med students, residents, attendings, faculty, etc., etc. etc., in addition to "ignorant" pre-meds such as myself. 🙂 That said, we live in a free society and are all allowed to make choices.

Since they both serve the same audience, there is a lot of cross pollination between the two communities, but I never really understood the obsession with me (I do not have an account there, have never posted there, and am consequently very flattered by all the attention I receive over there 😎 😎 😎 😎 😎), or the value of starting threads on one site discussing the pros and cons of the other site.

You keep being you, king

We received multiple reports against this thread. Locking this as it is unlikely to be beneficial to SDNers.
