Hello everyone,

I pretty much had the worst year of my life last year and I did mediocre on some of my core classes for the MCAT. Here's a breakdown:
First off, few notes. My university doesn't have +/- grades, simply A, B, C, D, F; And last year was quarters instead of semesters (which we switched to this year 13/14)

Year 2:
Bio 1,2,3 = B's
Bio Lab 1,2,3 = B's
Chem 1 = A | Chem 2, 3 = B
Chem Lab 1, 2, 3 = B
Calc A, B = B | Calc C = C

The grades aren't terrible, but not very good.

Currently I don't have any extracurriculars outside of having a job since freshman year. It's currently my sophomore year and I'm taking OChem 1 + lab, Phys 1, Anatomy/Physiology 1 + Lab (plus some other courses).

I'm just kind of freaking out right now because I don't know even if I can make up the courses that I wrecked because those courses were done under a different academic calendar setup. I didn't start my pre-med studies until year 2 because I decided to do it later in my first year.

Essentially; what should I do? Outside of do extraordinarily well in my classes this/next year and get a respectable grade on the MCAT?

Thanks

P.S. GPA = 3.850 cumulative year 1, 3.52 cumulative year 2.
P.S.S. Not sure what this adds to the equation but I'm doing a double major Health I.T. (I.T. + Pre-Medical) & Networking/Systems Administration.

Again, thanks for the help.

There's no secret here. Do well on the rest of the pre-recs. Ochem will be your chance to shine. Study like crazy for the MCAT and get a respectable score (30 and up). Maybe pick up a hobby. You are far far FAR from a lost cause, especially with that nice GPA (and frankly, B's are not terrible, just try to mix in some A's the rest of the way).

You're fine. It's still early on in your college career, and a bunch of B's are not going to kill you. Just try to pull off more A's in the future. Do you have any idea what may be holding you back? Are you short on study time?

Well what held me back was life. Just a really unfortunate series of events. Things have cleared up and I'm back on my feet again and getting my schedule back on track.

Would strongman be considered a hobby? Because I'm training for it right now.

As far as OChem goes I'm going to be better prepared for the next exam, first one I got a 70 on. Which from everyone I've talked to is about average. I'm probably going to just make sure to do all of the problems with the associated chapters since I pretty much knew the content but didn't apply it well.

Thanks for the replies.

Why would you take anatomy/physio with Ochem? Crazy.

Don't get down about it, just use your experiences as lessons for doing better in the future. You still have plenty of time to ensure that you apply to med school with a great GPA. Further, I've read posts from ADCOM members on this forum saying that a J shaped curve in grades is pretty normal for applicants. Learning from your experiences and doing better is the only option. Further, schools will love it when you apply and can write/talk about doing poorly academically and how you learned to be a better student and developed excellent study skills blah blah blah 🙂
