O.K. So I had an interview today and I wrote in my primary application that my father was murdered. My interviewer asked me if it was alright for me to elaborate and that’s when the poo started flying outta my mouth!
I told him that my father was schizophrenic and died in prison. I did elaborate on my fathers death as a growing experience and that I did receive therapy to get over it (he died when I was 14, I’m now 22). The interviewer didn’t seem to mind my answer or seem shocked and he was a psychologist. My interview was very laid back and we spoke about sports and interests and the community and it was extremely friendly, both before and after I mentioned my parental situation.

However, I’m worried that my interviewer may think badly of me b/c of this. Is this a reason of concern for medical schools?
I just guess I want some advice as to whether this could affect my acceptance.
😕😕

if you wrote about it in your personal statement that means the school invited you based in part on whatever you wrote which means that it is not a problem. they asked you to elaborate - they tend to do this at interviews. you told the truth (i assume) people should tend to do this at interviews as well. if you are a well adjusted and intelligent person they cannot hold against you things from your past that are not within your control. especially if you overcame something that huge to get to where you are. i hope that everything you said is true because if it isnt then that is a super weird thing to lie about. even on an anonymous internet forum.

People like people with interesting pasts.

If anything, having a schizophrenic father who was murdered in prison will play to your favor.

You should be fine, but the fact that one of the causes is genetic and the interviewer probably knows that might hurt very little.

I really don't see how anything could be counted against you here...

As for diarrhea of the mouth, it really just sounds like you were honestly answering. Its when the nerves get you to make it up that's a problem.

So no, don't worry about the diarrhea of the mouth. I, for one, would be more worried if my a$$ started talking.

This'll be the new thing people will start copying to try and be unique and get interviews!

You'll be fine. I mean it was bound to come up since it was in your PS.

I agree. I dont see why you would mention this in your PS if you didnt feel comfortable discussing it.

Wouldn't it be funny if someone just made up a big chunk of their "past" and used it in personal statement/interview/etc.! I bet they'd never know... 😉 Haha... don't worry I'm kidding.

Yeah, sadly it is true. (and there's a whole lot more to the story) But I promise I'm not a crazy person... well maybe a little....😛 lol. anyhow, i haven't heard anything yet. but i'll let you guys know when i do.
and Mr. Belding your a damn riot!!!!

And really, thanks for the responses. I do appreciate it so much

I think you'll be okay, and my condolences for your loss. Horrible thing to have to go through, I imagine.
