Hey guys. I recently interviewed at Wright State University and University of Cincinnati, and they both sent me letters recently. They weren't acceptance letters, rejections letters, or even wait-list letters. Both letters basically say the same thing: The committee has reviewed your application and is impressed with your credentials. Although we are unable to offer you a place in the entering class at this time, the committee remains very interested in your application. We would like to assure you that your application is under active consideration and of great interest to us. ...you could be offered an acceptance in the future.

So now what? Some of my classmates said that I should be writing to the school or calling them, to let them know that I am still interested, and that I really want to attend their school.

Does anyone have any experience in this matter? Should I write or call the school? Who should I speak with? What should I say? How often/how many times should I contact them?

This is my fourth time applying, and I would really like to get into school this year, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Dr. John,
I wouldn't waste any time and write two letters with a lot of specifics on why you would want to go to either school. I would also mail them right away, call and politely ask to speak to the director of admissions, or associate dean of admissions, or whatever they call it there (maybe the person who signed your letter). Let the secretary know what kind of letter you got and that you have questions about it. Don't hesitate to show a lot of interest and sound enthusiastic, maybe you can even mention to the dean (if you get to talk to him) that it is your fourth year applying and that you are really interested in his school (he prob already knows about the re-applying but it will be nice to remind him so he knows who you are and the urgency of all of this). Do all you can do, send additional info, call as many times as it takes - make them see you as a person not an application. You are probably not the only person in that situation, so it is important to stand out. At least you will know that you did all that you could. Good luck with everything, I hope this works out!!

I agree w/the above post. It sounds like you're on a waiting list, ie they've offered a bunch of slots already and are waiting to see who says yes or no before they commit. I've been told by adcom types (and read about students who got in off waitlists) that the best thing you can do is show a lot of interest. The advice above is very sound. I'd get right to it. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. Anyone else want to chime in?

I agree. I received one of those letters, and finally got around to sending an update. Two weeks later I got my rejection.

Yet when I sent a letter that said "I am really interesting in potentially pursuing a degree at your school....." I was accepted about a week later. I sent that letter about a week after I interviewed, whereas the other one was sent about three months after the interview.

Call, but don't be a pest. Make them aware that you are very interested, and that you want to go there. It can't hurt, unless you continually drive them nuts and email them and leave tons of messages.

Use common sense. 🙂

Common sense is key. Of course you want to establish a healthy communication with whomever is in charge, informing them of updates and especially of your interest in medicine (which must be huge if you are applying for the 4th time). However, I do think you have to get started soon, waitlists usually start moving around late april and then peak around late may/june. Regular acceptances will be all out way before then. You are in a special position of no wait list, no acceptance, no rejection. To me it seems that they just want to make sure where you stand before they invite you in. It doesn't cost you anything to try, as I see it you have nothing to lose. Good luck!

Damn... I assume you copy/pasted that from the U.C. letter, right? Because that's word for word what mine said. And to think that there were parts in the letter that made me actually think that it was written directly TO ME. I've been dooped...

Yeah, for the most part, that was all from Cincinnati's letter. I did add one bit from Wright State U. Well, I guess we'll both be talking to the admissions peeps at U.C. Good luck mellotron. Hope we both get in. By the way, did you apply to/hear anything from Wright State?
