But I need help figuring this out…

I'm presenting a poster at a major conference soon and the email from the organization says the poster boards are brown and stand 8 feet wide by four feet high. Does that mean they are expecting the poster to be that big? (48" high and 96" long)? Or is there a smaller standard size that I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Also, I can't find a way to assign the measurements to the poster outline in Microsoft powerpoint because it exceeds the limit. Will I be able to print it according to my measurement though? even if I don't prepare the powerpoint poster outline according to that?

Agreed with LizzyM.

In reality, your poster will probably be around 3-4 feet tall, and about 5 ft. wide. Sounds large, but think about the posters in the hallways at school. They are pretty big!

"Page setup" in PPT allows you to make some very large sized prints,...like, posters. Kinkos can print these out for you, if your school doesn't have a poster printer.

congrats on getting a spot at the conference 🙂 hope it goes well for you. also... strong presence in this thread haha.

It is ok to make the actual poster smaller than the poster board itself.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions! I did figure out how to use page setup, but unfortunately, it keeps saying that my poster dimensions are too big for powerpoint to handle =/ I will keep trying though! And yes, my school has a poster printer, so I will see if anyone there can help me…My PI actually wants the poster to fit the board exactly so it has to be bigger than the usual I guess…

This warning is essentially meaningless. If you just click "OK" and then go back into Page setup, you should see that it actually displays whatever dimensions you set.

One piece of advice from someone who has absolutely made this mistake - when you are done, save everything as a PDF, then print a preview on a normal sheet of paper (you'd be amazed by how many mistakes are suddenly obvious when you see them in print). Once you're satisfied with how everything looks, send the PDF to your copy center. Sending as a powerpoint file can cause Mac vs. PC trouble, and PDF format prevents this. Best of luck!
