Since its on a Saturday? I assume all the previous interns want to get off and we will start working, but only a smattering of attendings will be present...Do you think that only a few of us will work, based on scheduling?

Honestly, Im ready to go...I only wish I had my schedule!!!

I was told that in my program, the weekend is going to be treated as weekdays, meaning that all residents have to be present (usually, residents take their day off on the weekend, and others have to cover the patients), and all attendings have to show up and round with their teams. I don't think that we will be having conferences though.

I'm with you idio - I have training starting this friday and hopefully we will get our schedules. I just wish I knew if I was going to be in the ICU, doing trauma surgery or what on July 1. I am pretty sure I will be starting on that saturday. I suppose my life is just that much more exciting with this little mystery.

Yeah no kidding. I could be in general peds, the unit, ENT surgery ( :scared: ), IM subspecialty, or ER...at least no OB!!! Ive delivered my five babies, no more!!

wow you guys actually start on July 1st? All the programs I've heard of start much earlier! Ours starts on Wednesday, giving us a week or so with the old chiefs before they leave (poor them 🙂 ).

Enjoy your last week of freedom...no matter what.

I start tomorrow....June 20. And no, I don't know my schedule yet. 😛

I'll actually be on July 1, but half of the interns on my service (surgery) will be off that first weekend so they won't start until July 3.

We started orientation today, we'll have two weeks of that then we start rotations on July 3rd. Got our call schedule today. Man, I'm not going to get much sleep this year! I'm glad we're front-loaded and each year gets better or I don't know what I'd do. I've never done well on little-to-no sleep. I hope I just eventually get used to it...

Nothing, I just dont want to be in surgery at all right off the bat. Id rather get my feet wet in IM or ER first...maybe get my skills back up, since Ive been off work for three months.

You'll be just fine regardless of where you start. Expectations are much lower in the beginning.

When i was a medical student in my 4th year, I spoke to the chairman of the residency program that I had then just matched in. I asked him what would be the best way to keep up my skills during the 4th year. He said "you don't have any [skills]". It's true. The first 2 years of medical school are a big vocabulary lesson. The 2nd two are an orientation to the health-care environment. Residency is the time you learn practical skills. Don't bang yourself in the head if you see that despite your knowledge base, you can feel pretty lost at times during internship. It's par for the course.

Good luck!
