So what makes a periodontics program "superior" to others? How do you even know?

Hello,

I have been gathering information about various perio programs by reaching out to current residents. I've found it kinda interesting that certain programs have been consistently mentioned by the people I've spoken to as "top" programs.

How do you know which programs stand out among the various programs out there? What makes certain programs much more special than others? Really curious as I am in the information gathering phase.

Thank you.

Typically you’re looking at how many square feet of gums you’ll garden during your 3 years there. Ask current 3rd year residents at the interviews how many square feet they have gardened.

How much time is spent in clinic vs. didactics vs. teaching vs time spent on research. What are you looking for in a program? Some programs only have five clinic sessions a week while others have nine. Some programs will have you place implants your first year, other programs won't let you place them until third year. Is the program well rounded and do you get a good mix of traditional perio (osseous, crown lengthening, GTR, and soft tissue) as well as implants, full arch, lateral windows, GBR, and perio/prosth cases? Do you need to compete with OS, AEGD/GPR residents, or prosth residents to place implants? What is the tuition? Is there a stipend? Some programs like USC are $130k+/year, while others are tuition free or at a very low cost.
