I've heard this a thousand times, which means it's probably good advise. I actually do a lot of independent reading, but I'm trying to steer clear of anything even remotely related to medicine. It doesn't help though when most of what I read is nonfiction, and another 25% of that consists of medical memoirs.
As for looking over basic anatomy, I didn't take any kind of anatomy in college, so I'm expecting to have to put in a lot of hard work initially in medical school. However, based upon the fact that anatomy isn't a prerequisite course, I'm assuming that it will be possible for me to survive without doing any sort of pre-studying.
