What makes up for most of your revenue? I'm new to the Optometry field and I would like to know what it consists of to average 100,000 a year? Thank you.

If you are an employee then you earn salary.

If you are self-employed then the breakdown ranges from 100% exam fees (no material sales) to (in some cases) less then 50% exam fees, with material sales making up the difference.

Are you a new OD student?

im going into the optometry field. im an Undergrad right now.

I'm not interested in the money THAT much. but it does make me wonder how you can make 100,000 from 50 dollar eye exams....

lets see...

an average optometrist makes how many exams a day?

and if you do go into retail for glasses, how does that work? Do you buy the glasses from the company or what? Sorry for these new questions.

$50 x 10pt/day =$500/day
$500 x 20workdays/mo=$10,000/mo
$10,000 x 12 months/yr= $120,000/yr

Those are corporate numbers, and don't take into account a ton of other variables (contact lenses, pt volume, additional testing, overhead, vacation, benefits, etc) The retail aspect of things is a bit more involved, but basically when you buy a pair of glasses, you are buying it from the retailer, who in turn buys it from the manufacturer or wholesaler. This is simplified, but hope it helps. Sounds like you should consider shadowing an OD to see what you are getting yourself into.

I see. Thank you.

Another question I have is leasing.

How much is it to lease an area per month? I know it is going to be VERY difficult to answer because of location and what not, but what is the general?
I was thinking around 1,500 a month?

And how much does it cost to buy all the equipment that you need to start?

Is 10 appointments a day hard to establish?

Thank you

i know an optometrist who takes about 35 patients a day...one every 15 mins, and doesn't take a lunch break..they are mostly full exams as well...i wonder how much he's making

😱 how long has he been in business? old guy or new OD?
that is a lot I THINK! also was it his private practice in the city or maybe a place in a mall?

I think he has only been in business for a few years...he works for a private practice but does not own it. I wonder what percentage he gets and how much goes to the owner!

Wow, now share with us how you run a practice with ZERO overhead. What's the secret?
