I am really interested in Psychiatry. It was my last rotation and by then it was too late to apply for it. Should I wait a year to apply from fresh? Or should I try to get into Surgery Prelim, as Medicine prelims are barely available. What are other options from SOAP that I can do?

Thank in advance!

Depends: are you single? Kids? As one married with two kids, I'd take a surgery prelim even if it meant repeating an intern year later. I still haven't responded in the other thread regarding medical licensure without a residency so I'll have to do that tomorrow when I'm not in bed on my phone.

If you went through the Match then you should be eligible for SOAP. If you did not go through the Match you can not do SOAP. Once we hit next week when SOAP is done, any unfilled slots can be filled by anyone. I would say that having a job and additional training is better than not being in medicine for a year.

probably, but that doesn't mean it would be best for the individual in question....it may not be and it may be. It really comes down to how much a surgery prelim year would suck for him.

Knowing a lot of people in psychiatry, they would *really hate* a prelim surgery year. For many, including myself, it would be very unhealthy to do from a psychological standpoint.

Not being any medicine for a year isn't going to kill an otherwise non-atrocious app....so for people who could never tolerate a surgery prelim year and do so in a decent state of mind, it might be best to just not do that.
