  1. Pre-Medical
Hi all! I am in the midst of prepping to this upcoming cycle and have a question about my gap year job. I have been working in the NYC welfare system as a case manager in a psychotherapy program. While I am not technically considered a social worker because I don't have an MSW, that is really what I am working as. I am a case manager who works along sociotherapists helping out with the intervention/therapeutic techniques with the child and parent (working on reattachment). I also work to stabilize families by helping mostly with medical needs (thats my speciality), so getting medical records, up to date insurance, doctor appointments, a lot of doctor and mental health referrals etc as well as other random stabilization needs like housing, education etc.

I am looking to start working on my application and I am really excited to talk about my experience in social work, working with entirely disadvanataged populations, but I am not really sure where this type of work fits under - specifically in the aamc work/activities section? I would love to think its clinical, because we are working in very specific therapeutic techniques that I assist with and then I also focus on medical needs, but I am not sure it is.

Anyone have any advice? Is this just paid employement not medical, but maybe something I can talk about more deeply in the description and secondaries or personal statement of where I can really tie in why it is GREAT experience before becoming a doctor?

Literally any advice would be appreciated. thank you!!

Because you get paid, you need to put Paid employment - Nonclinical. However, that label in no way, shape or form takes away from the nobility of the work you do and your job will be perceived thusly by the admissions committee. 🙂

Thank you for doing what you do. 🙂
