Hey guys,

I was wondering how tough a sociology major is?

you're joking right? Sociology is one of the easiest majors..that's why I picked it! 😀

 👍 That's a good one... no it's easy as sin, and if you actually enjoy it, do it... I took a couple sociology classes and I loved it. So go ahead and pad up your GPA 😉

I think the only easier Major is a Liberal Arts degree with an empasis in underwater basket weaving. But it does help the GPA if you want!👍

Study whatever the hell you want in college. No one on any admissions committee cares, as long as you have the prerequisites. Sociology is mind-numbingly boring, but easy.

Should be noted though, that even though it might not affect your admissions chances to be another major (as long as you have the pre-reqs), from what I hear having a strong bio/science background helps quite a bit once you get into med school and it can be substantially more difficult for those who have just taken the pre-reqs when starting out.

I can believe that.

The consensus on SDN is that you should pick a major in what you are most interested in and that you're fine as long as you satisfy prereqs. I agree with the first, but am uncomfortable with the second.

Definitely study what you love, but if it's non-science, I'd take a healthy dose of science classes beyond what is required. Take it with a grain of salt, maybe I'm just a bit of a dim bulb, but I think I would have benefited from studying science beyond one year of Bio/OChem/GenChem/Physics. I think my MCAT score suffered from not having the familiarity of doing lots of readings of trade journals and whatnot.

I was actually considering sociology for a major, (I'm a bio major), but I feel it'd just be hell If I switched now...and theres something odd about the the thought of me getting a degree in sociology.....it just doesn't seem...right.

Don't be a dork and pick your major based on which one is easiest. People can often see right through that, with gunner-types. There was a girl I know who picked every single class of hers based on which were the easiest available that term, aside from her pre-reqs and major requirements. I'm not actually sure she got in anywhere, though her GPA was great. Her sciences weren't so great because she hadn't done anything but the bare minimum.

Irish the sociology at ND is a good add on, only 25 credits

My friend is a Soc major but she is only getting 2.5 overall 😱
Not a cakewalk as some people say here. Our school is pretty intense. It requires three 8 page essays + 400+ pages of reading+ midterm + final in just a 10 weeks/quarter course!

Sociology is definitely not easy. At least at my school its not.

i got a minor in sociology.....most of the classes were freakin' hard! essay tests, huge papers to write, tons of reading and research. at my school, psychology was MUCH easier

Guys, I kinda was not kidding. Well at Notre Dame, the major is only 25 credits. I hope that the topics are easy. Is this an essay based literature/english type course or is this a conceptual issue based course (like bio, which I am kind of good at)? I mean how do you relate sociology, anthropology, and psychology? What are some distinct differences between each as far as the type of course each one is?

Thanks.
